Chad, we're going to miss you.
I'm glad you've finally recovered from your brain injury.
Glad you're finally on track to get that RV flying! No more excuses!

I fear that these guys need someone who understands turbocharged engines to help them. A failure on liftoff means something is seriously wrong with spark or fuel management and/or the CR is too high for auto fuel. Secondly, cast pistons don't belong in turbocharged aircraft engines. Everything has t...

Mooneys and Grummans seems to have a lot more shake and vibration in their Lycoming installations than say a 172. I'm guessing structure and mounts play a large part here. The Lyco RVs I've flown were more towards the Cessna range and pretty tolerable- not too much of the wet dog thing at startup an...

Good discussion guys and I'd agree with most of the comments here. You've kept things very factual and realistic. Unless you are going to DIY, costs will be higher, weight will probably be higher, performance without a turbo will be lower and fuel burn will be higher. Bottom line, if performance is ...

Re: Chad......You change your mind about an engine again?!?!
In fact, amazingly enough, it looks somewhat like a legitimate air cooled aircraft engine. I dunno, it looks an aweful lot like a Subaru or VW aircooled engine to me :dunno: Can't be a Sube as it only has 3 main bearings- Sube has 5 on a four banger. No crankpin overlap either so a loooong stroke t...

It is interesting that Roger states that it was not possible for the relief valve to go fully closed from a servo malfunction if I read this right. Even if the valve does not fully close, it the supercharger mass flow greatly exceeds the flow rate of the relief valve in the partially open condition,...

I'm going steam in my RV10. It will be one of only two in existence I understand. Glass is cool once you get it working and figure out how to use it, bad thing is, it becomes obsolete in 2-5 years, the companies won't service or support it most likely and it is then worth nothing used. Makes a good ...

People are using many different aftermarket ECUs for aviation. Probably a better bet than many OE ones. We've been doing it for 13 years now: http://www.sdsefi.com/aircraft.html

I certainly don't know why Roger's STI quit but if the comment about spiking boost is correct, that can only be caused by the electric throttle closing based on other ECU commands or a problem with the supercharger bleed valve closing without pilot command. Don't know if Roger had an electronic or c...

The Wankel isn't better, just different. Has a good power to weight ratio and volume to power ratio but the piston engine has come so far in the last 10 years with VVT, direct injection and technologies like BMWs valvetronic, the Wankel is far behind in fuel economy in typical part throttle automoti...

I like Mistral's package too. If they could reduce the cost a bit, I think it has real possibilities at capturing some of the alternative engine market. Of course we do need to see some actual flight test numbers first. I like the fact that they are open to independent people using their parts. Some...

The grass makes a big difference in TO acceleration. I think the Knig Air E90 manual said to add 50% to TO distances on 3 inch dry grass for instance. Tall grass even worse, throw in high density altitude and lower power output and you have some serious considerations in any aircraft. I crunched the...

John, I wonder why you are installing an O-235 in your -9 if you are so concerned about performance here. I can guarantee that you'll be a bit concerned taking off on say 1800 feet of useable grass on a hot day over 50 foot trees at gross too! Seems to me that Chad's comments are reasonable about wh...

I've flown a 7A with a FP Sensenich and O-360 and it was a total dog on the takeoff roll. Had time to file your nails from the application of full power to liftoff. Used at least twice the runway of my turbo Subie and I push the power up very slowly on it. Once we got about 110 knots it was pretty g...

That's a pretty decent weight for an H6 with paint and fairings. I find many of the Lycoming guy's weights are pre-paint, pre-interior, no ELT etc. Very few C/S Lycoming RVs weigh less than 1100 lbs. in full done configuration these days. BTW that RV takeoff video looked pretty scary. Might have bee...

Thanks for the great post, Ross. You are a good source for Subie developement history. Sounds like we both agree that ALL Subie marketers have exaggerated their performance in the past. The question remains, though, is the H-6 making anywhere near 200 hp at this time. Even though it's a 6, it is on...

John, I wasn't commented on what Jan was saying in the early days- most people know today that the "160 hp" engines were never putting out anywhere close to this as evidenced by the performance people were getting. Many people were calling for dyno tests to back up the claimed hp when it was obvious...
