Well... I had come to think of rivetbangers.com as a pretty cool place to hang out. But when the mistreatment of animals becomes a joke, it's time for me to move on.
Best of luck to everyone on their project, and goodbye rivetbangers.

That mainstay of the handyman's arsenal, WD-40, will remove just about any adhesive residue. If it's a part that'll be primered, be sure to get the WD cleaned off completely!

That's cool Bill. In a time when too many parents seem to look for ways to AVOID interacting with their children (DVD players in the minivan, etc.), it's great to see somebody doing something constructive with the offspring. It's time I'm sure none of you will ever regret spending that way. So, who'...

My kit (which I bought second-hand) was ordered with the slider parts. I thought long and hard about buying the tip-up parts, mainly because I think the tip-up looks a little better. But those parts cost about $300, and it doesn't look THAT much better. I'm pretty sure I'll stick with the slider. On...

It's a little hard to judge how steep the slope is from your photos, but with a few willing hands, some strategically-placed ropes, and some chocks, you shouldn't have too much trouble. As far as the fence, when the time comes I wouldn't hesitate to take that sucker down temporarily. The basement de...

Another greatsource is McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/  Do a search on "nonwoven abrasives" or "nylon mesh abrasives" or even just "scotchbrite". The only problem is that their catalog is so huge, you can blow a lot of time just window shopping. Lots of tools, hardware, you name it, and...

Hmmm... so buzzards watch the sailplanes for clues as to where the best lift is? Maybe not so stupid after all, eh?

Eagles definitely win in the looks department though!

Great shots of a magnificent bird Pat. Around my area,we get a good many turkey vultures (usually known as buzzards), and while they're not physically pretty, they have an easy mastery of the air that we humans can only envy. I guess not everyone finds them beautiful, but I do. I wish I were as good...

Okay, I'll go next. I live outside Savannah, GA where I work as a Liaison Engineer for Gulfstream Aerospace. For those who've never heard of "Liaison Engineering" it's the place where design meets production; I basically fix what goes wrong. I see everything from misdrilled holes to (ugh) bird strik...

Re: You guys are building the right plane

Found this on the EAA Airventure website: Last year, RVs made up 36 percent of the homebuilts in attendance. Some day we'll rule the world! Fly my pretties, fly! Sorry, we now return you to sanity. Amen to that Svanarts. When I was in the first stages of deciding which of the many worthy kitplanes ...

Good deal Spike! I have N918PP reserved; the story behind it is simple. It's a tribute to my marriage. The "918" part refers to our anniversary (18 September). The "papa papa" comes from my wife's statement that in spite of being two very different people, we're still two peas in a pod (2 Ps, get it...

Spike, this is the kind of thing I've been paid to fix for 20 years; do not despair! A few points: 1. Your countersink cutter moved because once it cut completely through the material (a "knife-edge" condition), there was not enough material remaining to hold the pilot (the little protrusion on the ...

The mechanism of the accidents seems to be a jamming of the nose wheel by the pant, causing the airplane to transfer all of it's weight to the nose gear, which then collapses. Doesn't appear to be a case of the strut (for example) breaking first. I seem to recall reading somewhere of a nose strut th...

For what it's worth, I found it convenient to get a lot of small parts fabricated, then prepped and primed them all at once. That way saved me having to set up the "process line" too frequently. It did seem that I wasn't making much progress at that point, but once assembly time came, it was great t...

Nose gear concerns

I'm not sure whether this is the correct forum to mention this topic, but since Screwup Chronicles includes "lessons learned the hard way", I'll start here. This is not about my own screwup, but something that all of us building nosewheel RVs need to watch out for. On an least one of the other RV fo...
