Bob, It looks to me like the locking lug is too close to the face of the radio. Try unscrewing the mounting screw (as if you were removing the radio) until it hits a stop. At this point the locking lug should be as far as possible from the face of the radio. Now insert the radio into the tray and st...

The real problem is just communication: If someone had told the people on the ground what was happening ahead of time there would have been no panic (or reason for panic).

Dave, You are correct, I have this set-up and have not had the pitch problems. Although I can't recall the context exactly, I do believe I remember something about grounds being suspect. I have all electronics (avionics, radios, autopilot etc.) grounded to a single point in the instrument panel, but...

Greg,

I think that you will find the aux tanks give you even more operational flexibility than you think. If you find fuel cheaper somewhere than at your home field, you top off the mains and put enough in the outboards to land with full main tanks. This can be a real money saver.

Greg, My transfer pumps are the Facet pumps, and they are installed in the bay between the tanks. I always turn them on for take off, but so far the transfer has always worked fine even without the pumps running. Dave, Actually, in flight having extra weight carried in the wing REDUCES stress on the...

Here is a picture of the jammed elevator servo arm: http://napwars.com/RV-8HTML/Pictures/ap001.jpg And here is my solution: http://napwars.com/RV-8HTML/Pictures/ap002.jpg The screw in the photo is secured with both locktite and safety wire. I used a MS24677-14 which is a socket head cap screw with a...

Tom, Thanks for the links. Since the screw is threaded into the servo drive boss, there is no possibility of using a locking nut (that's the problem). So far, it looks like the MS35265-41 screw is the best solution. All the others are too big or too long. I will try to find one locally today so I do...

Safety of Flight - Autopilot servo arm screws

Cross post from "The Other Side" It was a beautiful day here in the DFW area, so I decided to take my 8 up just to bore holes in the sky. After doing a few clearing turns, I started a loop. Up I went into the "delirious burning blue" and over the top just enjoying the wonderful view, then down the b...

Bret, You probably already know this, but make sure you really clean the lay-up before you start sanding (soap and water works fine). The epoxy cures with an "amine blush" on the surface which really loads up the sandpaper. the amine blush will also keep subsequent layers of epoxy from sticking unle...

High(er) Altitude Flying

I don't go very high when I am just flying around for fun, but to get the most out of the cross country economy potential of these airplanes, you need to go high. Obviously this depends on the winds aloft, but my airplane will do 165 knots true on 6.2 gallons per hour at 16000 ft. If there is any ta...

Some Performance Numbers:

The more I fly this airplane, the more I like it. Last weekend I flew from the Dallas/Fort Worth area to Saginaw, Michigan to see my family. 1786 nautical miles round trip in 12.1 hours on 86 gallons of fuel. On the way up to Michigan I had to make some fairly extensive weather diversions or I would...

I understand that there is a gear or dowel that can fail. Could someone explain what exactly it is I am talking about? Thanks-- The gear on the back end of the crank (inside the accessory section) can break the spline which causes it to turn with the crank. If that goes, you loose magnetos, oil pum...

What's everyone else doing? (Besides Chad.....we all know by now he is deciding how to match the bottom of a Van's cowl with the top of a Sam James cowl to fit his VW 1200cc engine :o! ) I practiced formation take-offs and four ship formations in the early morning; rode along with Falcon Flight whi...

Paul, I guess we will have to agree to disagree then. A basic law of physics is the equivalence principle - that is; it is impossible to tell the difference between gravity and forces provided by inertial forces. If you are doing a turn and the inclinometer ball is falling to the inside of the turn,...

Paul, I assure you that if you are in a coordinated turn, the fuel has no way of knowing if you are banked, straight and level, or even inverted (so long as you have positive G's). The actual problem is uncoordinated flight (slips and skids) and parking on an uneven ramp. Since it is unlikely anyone...

First RV IFR

With several days off this week, and the phase 1 completed, I flew my 8 from the DFW area to Hilton Head. Monday was a beautiful day all the way from DFW to the island, but I filed IFR anyway just to get experience in the system with my new toy. At 11000 feet, I got ground speeds as high as 220 knot...
