Finished off my 40 hours yesterday afternoon after the clouds broke. Hazy, but not bad. My patient wife came by the airport after work for her first flight in the new plane, her first GA flight in almost a year. http://rv9a.pacificrimsound.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/n627dw_on_ramp.jpg http://rv9...

Engine cleaning
Despite all attempts to keep it contained, the sanding/shaping process of the cowling install has left my shiny engine covered in fiberglass powder. Blowing it off with the air hose helped, but didn't completely remove it. Assuming all the holes, ports, etc are covered or plugged, is there any reaso...

Common Adel clamp sizes
Looking ahead to engine/electrical goodies, what sizes of Adel clamps are commonly required? It looks like most people use a pile of them, but there doesn't seem to be a vendor who sells an "assortment kit" -- did you just order, say, 10 of each size in the Spruce catalog? Also, it looks like I coul...

If your intercom is mono, you have a few options: 1. Take just one channel of the music input (usually the left channel--the tip lug--is taken, which has the side benefit of allowing it to still work should you ever plug music into the jack with a mono plug). Leave the ring lug un-connected. Simple ...

I know nothing, but I too have purchased these ports a couple months back, and was planning to install them in the next week or so, on the supposition that the newest (protruding) version of these had fixed the error problem. One observation: the ports I received don't look the same as Brian's -- yo...

Is it possible you ended up with a normalling jack? These would have the 5 solder lugs you're seeing; the two extra lugs are connected to the tip and ring terminals when there is no plug inserted, but disconnect when the plug is inserted. Excellent, thanks for the replies, gentlemen. It seems like painting parts before assembly is the way to go, even though it means more messing with the spray gun. If I want to get anything done this winter, I'm gonna need to figure out a spray booth that can be set up & taken down with ease. Semi-re...

Paint firewall stiffeners pre-assembly?
A question for those of you who have assembled/painted the cabin area already: should the firewall stiffeners be painted with the interior color, or just primered? I don't know how visible they are when sitting in the plane. I'm thinking I will paint the interior with the Rustoleum Hammered stuff, a...

Looking good! Thanks for the pictorial guide -- I'll be tackling this in the next couple of weeks, and I've read much of the commentary on tank sealing, but seeing it in pictures is a good "huh, that doesn't look too bad after all" moment. What did you use to scuff the stiffener and rib lines? Looki...

Haven't done it myself yet, but coming to that point in my wings and had the same question. I couldn't see anything in the install manual, but found this is in the archives of the AFS support forums: Will the Duckworks landing lights interfere with the AOA ports or calibration? No, the landing light...

After hearing that other people had the same problem and resolved it by working the ribs in, I had another go at it, and used a method I found on another builder's website (http://www.flightinnovations.com/wings.html; about 1/3 of the way down the page). I used some scrap 2x4's and a pair of long ba...

Leading edge fit trouble
Working on the wings for a 9A, making plenty of progress over the holidays, until I hit a rough patch with the leading edge. I've taken it apart & put it together three times over 2 nights, checking flange squareness, fluting, rounded the forward tabs a little more on the scotchbrite wheel, but stil...

Thanks for the advice, guys. Replacement spars are on order from Van's (at no charge); the latest estimate is 1-3 months, so hopefully I'll see them in time for Christmas. The plan is to go ahead with ailerons & flaps (back to deburring...just when I thought I had a break for awhile!). I shou...

but who wants to build two sets of wings.:x :x Exactly... I thought, too, that I had read somewhere that the guy in the RVator article later had his own regrets about bending them instead of having them replaced. Of course, I can't find that now...maybe it was a dream. I asked about the reason for ...

yikes
I sent a follow-up email to Van's Monday evening after receiving the official notice on this problem. They recommended I try the 2x4 flange-bending method from the RVator article. Not being completely satisfied with this solution, I inquired today about replacement spars. The word is that it's "defi...

I haven't received the notice yet, but I definitely have the problem (I think you've seen my thread on the subject on the other forum). I emailed Van's with my information & photos last weekend, and on Monday (a week ago) they asked me to send the spar numbers because they would "like to try to isol...

Bruce -- Looks good! A timely topic for me, getting ready to order wings. Do you know if the Evan's mast will accept a heated tube later on down the road? (Gretz, Dynon, Falcon, etc?) I believe the Safeair mast will accept the popular tubes, heated or no. If the Evans mast is the same way, it is an ...
