RV8A - ASN Report - Queensland - VH-MKX
RV8A - ASN Report - Queensland - VH-MKX I’m not sure if this aircraft was still fitted with a Subaru engine. It has crashed before due to engine issues. A Van's RV-8A crashed under unknown circumstances into some bushland, shortly after takeoff from runway 28 at Heck Field Airport (YHEC), Norwell, Q...

Re: Cold therapy - it works
One nice thing about stepping out of an ice-cold shower is that, even in the winter, you feel warmer once you’re out. :) Today it was -9C, (16F) and I shoveled snow bare chested because I was hot. We had 10 inches in Cincy. https://stayshredded.com.au/blogs/news/take-a-cold-shower-7-massive-benefits...

Re: A couple printed widgets
For no particular reason, I decided to turn the hose baffle mount into a wire seal. I was going to name it the El Grande Suprimo Wire Seal, but ended up calling it the 4-Screw Wire Seal instead. :) This one is polyphenylene sulfide material, rated for up to 350°F. Just another option. Strong like Bu...

Re: A flight without a bike aboard
Winter slow flight training is perfect for keeping engine temps low. At one point, I clocked a ground speed of just 9 knots. Flying right on the edge, maneuvering without stalling, is a great learning experience, and it doesn’t take much bank to make it happen. The RV9 feels comfortable in this regi...

Re: A couple printed widgets
The cowl support tool is now available for sale on the website, and by popular request, the hose baffle mount selection has been expanded to include standard ID sizes. These mounts can also be used for bulk wire pass-through. The baffle mounts offer two materials, high temp nylon 300F and polyphenyl...

Re: A flight without a bike aboard
I practiced slow flight today, and there’s so much to pick up from keeping an aircraft right on the edge while maneuvering. After 12 years of owning the RV9, I’m still completely happy with its performance, handling, and the overall cost of owning and operating it. It handles like a dream in slow fl...

Re: RV7 - ASN Report - France - F-PVAO
While preheating the aircraft today, I confirmed that you can view the aft side of the RV200 propeller hub with a borescope. It appears to be a casting because I think I see a mold line (I don't know for sure). If it is a casting, I will not be impressed as castings can have voids and be locations f...

Re: Hangar pull-up bar
If the diameter of your pull-up bar is too large and you’re wearing slick gloves, it helps to wrap your thumb over the top of the bar. After a few reps, it feels like you’ve got a built-in heater warming your chest. https://i.postimg.cc/ZY84SVn5/IMG20260117112004.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/fWcDNByT/IM...

Re: A flight without a bike aboard
It was 2°C at takeoff, then a -14°C layer appeared at 6,000 ft, but it warmed up to -3°C by 8,500 ft. Strange—a layer of air like that just happens sometimes. I swapped out the red air dams for black ones, and the oil temperature climbed into the yellow. I’m really pleased with my radio’s plastic gl...

Re: RV7 - ASN Report - France - F-PVAO
Looks like we’ve figured out what took a chunk out of the vertical stab—a propeller blade. It appears to be a WW HRT 2 propeller. From the somewhat unclear photo, the fatigue seems to be on the aft side (where the crack originated), with the final ductile failure on the forward side. This makes sens...

Re: A flight without a bike aboard
Another flight without the bike aboard… -2°C at takeoff and -17°C at altitude, with gusts up to 24 knots straight down the runway. I practically had the sky to myself. The whole point was just to fly and keep the engine lubricated. Oil temperature only reached 158°F, so I hooked up the dehumidifier ...

RV7 - ASN Report - France - F-PVAO
RV7 - ASN Report - France - F-PVAO I’m not sure how a chunk of the vertical stabilizer got removed during this event, unless it was from a large bird or it somehow snapped off during the flip over. There’s also some oil on the belly. https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/565568 A Cessna plane crashed...

Re: A couple printed widgets
I’m making steady progress on the cowl support tool. The pipe bonding tooling arrived, and I think it’s going to improve pipe perpendicularity. There are four key surfaces to control with the print, and I’m definitely within 0.010 inch—maybe even 0.0005—and it’s a repeatable process. So far, I’m hap...

Re: SL30 Faceplate mechanical attachment
It’s a snug fit, and I hope it’s the last time I’ll need to work on it. I used G/Flex epoxy, and added a small gusset on the right-hand side for extra stiffness after breaking one off during the plastic cleanup preparation. That little gusset helped a lot. https://i.postimg.cc/gcQ0XLHZ/IMG2026011313...
