Any hints or suggestions from those that have done this before? Order a new one. I'm serious. #1 gave me all kinds of problems and I ended up cracking two holes. #2 slid in like butter! I think Van's improved the bends on this part. You can see the differences between them in the top picture here ....

Good call. The benefit of the stripmaster is that because of the die it doesn't nick the wire. I got mine, along with a ratcheting crimper, from www.mytoolstore.com.

A further note... if the sides of the aft skin aren't bent vertically, get a new one. I went through 2 of those (long story) and the second one came bent from Van's ...

Better Is the Enemy of Good Enough

You might just consider putting the rudder aside for a bit. Come back to it in a few weeks or months, you may find that you feel differently about it.
