Wing bolt orientation

The only drawing I can find in the plans regarding wing bolts is for a 7, not an "A" model. Obviously on the taildragger, having all bolts oriented from front to back is certainly not a problem. But with the gear weldments, some -- well, all four -- of the bottom bolts must be oriented back to front...

You've probably seen this over on "the other side," but this is being moved out of Camp Scholler which is moving the 24-hour generator area out to where we camp (although today they changed it to only going out to 15th St, still too close unless you like truck stops. I don't). Current possibilities ...

Douglas Gardner

Douglas Gardner, an RV-8 builder in Tampa, has been identified as the person killed in a crash near Sebring.

If you've ever hung an engine on an RV, you can thank him and a couple of others from the Tampa Bay RVers group who wrote the Illustrated Guide to Engine Hanging a few years ago.

I know you're breathlessly awaiting the results but I ended up just pulling the old aluminum tube out and throwing it away. Also made a 7/16" hole in the wing spar to route it forward. Now I'm realizing I should've made it bigger because I think I want to put in an AOA. I'm at the stage of the build...

The connection problem was easy to fix, just swap out a -3 nipple for a -4 nipple. For some stupid reason, I figured the end that screws into the pipe fitting would be a different size.

Would that the routing now to the instrument panel were as easy a fix.

The AL tube is what the plans call for. The problem is that Van's does not address the pitot run at all in its plans. Most folks build the wing and run the aluminum tube and leave a bunch sticking out of the wing root, assuming that there'll be guidance later on. There isn't. What I did last year wa...

Pitot tube routing

So, I've got this aluminum tubing coming to the wing root rib and I've got this SafeAir green pitot tube. Questions abound: 1) What's a good way of connecting the aluminum tube to the plastic tube? 2) Where should it come into the fuselage? 3) How should it be routed once in the fuselage. I've got n...

A lot of RVers put it behind their roll bar, anchoring it on the gusset plate and then wrapping it around the roll bar with clamps. That's mostly just to comply with having an ELT in the plane; the chances of it actually work there aren't particularly good. I've stuck mine out in the breeze -- in fa...

Re: Threading the throttle cable

Drill a larger hole in the firewall to allow the nuts to pass. Thread cable through the firewall then connect to each bracket at the engine and the panel. Install an eyeball firewall fitting. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/eyeballfw.php The problem isn't at the firewall ...

Threading the throttle cable

Scratching my head. There's a big nut on the cabin end of the throttle cable (I think the mixture cable is the same way), You can't get it off by unscrewing it because there are two other nuts down at the business end that you can't get off because of a rubber card on the cable. The mission: Thread ...

You're right Bob. But then there are plenty of us that have to cut the budget at every possible place. If not A plane would not be possible at all. Sign me: No primer, used engine, cheap panel, But got a plane Brian Oh, believe me, I know. I didn't use fancy primer. I don't have a nav/com (just a c...

This is one of those topics I simply don't get. People prime the crap out of their airplanes because someday -- a hundred years from now -- corrosion might present a problem. They spend thousands on redundant electrical systems because of a slight chance one might fail. They stick dual Cheltons in a...

DynonD100 to Garmin 327

Does anyone have the EXACT configuration settings for allowing a D100's encoder to pass the pressure altitude for the Garmin 327 transponder. I'm using the harness that Stein built for me so I assume it's put together correctly but all I get is four dashes where the altitude should display. Nothing ...

I think EAA gets its musical lineup from the billboard at the local Indian casino -- those things always book the over-the-hill acts because the over-the-hill people are the ones with the dough. If you've ordered battery cables (#2) from Van's Aircraft in the last year (or so), you'll want to check them very closely. Here's why.

Piece of Grass 2010 Planning

My vacation down to the desert southwest, and the opportunity to see a few of my Oshkosh pals , has motivated me to get started on planning the annual RV Builders Family Reunion for Oshkosh -- also known as Piece of Grass, since that's what we provide -- a piece of grass to sit or stand upon for sev...

You can also find these at a good Ace Hardware. The kind with the shelf full of containers with bolts and stuff.
