Email Address in Profile

Post by RV7Factory »

I hope this doesn't come off as a complaint, because it isn't.

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but Spike and Patti get a lot of trolls or spammers registering for site access, sometimes to the tune of several a day. They do a great job of deleting/deactivating these accounts, but they can't watch the door 24/7.

This means that a newly registered (spammer) user has access to each of our profiles, and email addresses, if you have chosen to provide one in your profile, until the time their account is deleted.

Now, this may not make any difference to you if you have your email address posted on your web site or as a part of your signature, but for someone like me who has taken precautions to hide my email address, it creates the possibility that it could be harvested.

Anywhooo... do what you want with the info, I am just looking out for my friends.

Spike & Patti... thanks for being so aggressive at monitoring the user list!

Actually Im not sure that you are correct. Spammers register, but dont get access until the account is activated.

We go through every request by hand to make sure its a real person before granting access, which is usually 30 - 60 requests per day. Ugggh.

Just because someone is listed on the bottom of the main page as a "new member" does not mean they get access to the board like the real users do.

I just verified this. Your email is hidden Brad to people who are not logged in. Accounts can't be logged into until we "activate" them. You are good to go.

Well slap me silly and call me Susan!

That's good to know. I knew you had to be logged in to see the profiles, but I've occasionally seen them (the scum) listed it the Memberlist, and I assumed they were already "active". What do these people hope to accomplish?

Sorry for the confusion.

sok. Many of them hope to accomplish one thing, and that is to get their web url out there so that the search engine crawlers will find them. That makes them relevant and brings them up in searches. Its also a challenge.

One of the mods for the board on the perpetual to do list is to mod the board so that only "active" members show up down below.
