D2 seems to be Tits Up - but D3 is better

need to research the Dynon website. the D2 has been on there for 4 (edit: 7 years) years without touching or upgrading.

Firmware update did not correct the D2 issue. decided to move on and get a D3 to mount in the same place. I went back to look when I purchased the D2 and it was actually 7 years ago. so, I managed 7 good years from the D2. cockpit heat was probably its worst enemy, sitting on the ramp in the sun. goodbye D2, really OK. the D3 price now is less than I paid for the D2 years ago. drop in place.

this D2 and a 740b wireless failure (repaired for $25) are the only avionics failures in 10 years. I'm not complaining.

hey, the 3M Dual lock has been there 7 years, attaching the D2 mounting block to the panel.

Re: D2 seems to be Tits Up - D3 upgrade

I think I am going to like the D3. no buttons on the top so I can move it around and attach it other places within 3 seconds. is this the optimal solution, no.... but hey. needs some testing in real weather conditions. the D3 is easy to adjust pitch setting, tap in the degree correction by touchscreen. my D2 never needed the external antenna. I'm sure the D3 will be the same, but it needed the external antenna in the hangar to find itself.

these Dynon D's are true attitude indicators.

D3 test flight was good. not head banging bumps but close. D3 was secure and reading steady. the difference between the mounting angle for these locations is 16 degrees. I set 21 degrees on the panel wedge and 5 degrees when under the glare shield. once you reset the install angle it takes a couple seconds for it to adjust itself. note: is only reads GPS speeds and altitudes and does not require any connections except power. if it is the same as my D2, it will operate on the battery for 6 hours, I tested it. if you are landing into the wind, you will always be fast thru the air using GPS speeds. I like it for the passenger, and it is a simple attitude backup. two for one. my major avionics upgrade, shipped in one day. :)

I am not sure why the white line is posted on the D3 slightly above the horizon. I need to read the manual.

BTW: I reached out to Dynon to see if my D2 could be repaired, and they said no since it was out of production but offered a $300 dollar credit, but I had already jumped the gun and the D3 was on the way. Dynon tried to make it better, but I was too quick. I like everything in my aircraft to be in working order. Dynon.... good people.
