I dimpled my tank skins using cleveland tank dies, which are slightly deeper than the standard die, and I did like Chad and swirled a tiny bit of sealant into each hole before instering the rivets. After riveting, I cleaned the outside of the tanks good so that there was no visible ring of sealant around the rivet heads. Everything looks good, but the rivets feel proud in that the edge of the rivet seems to be more exposed than normal. I checked them with a straight edge and they are flush with the surrounding skin, but I think they feel proud because the sealant I swirled into the hole doesn't allow the rivet to sit as deep in the dimple as it normally would, and since I used tank dies, the dimple is slightly deeper. Clear as mud? You can kind of see what I am talking about here, the rivets aren't proud (relative to the skin), but you can see more edge than is typical.

This is the long way of asking... is this normal? I started to think that maybe I shouldn't be cleaning up so much of the sealant that surrounds the rivets heads, that way the edge of the rivet won't feel proud/sharp.
