Riveting Tanks - Rivets Feel Proud

Post by RV7Factory »

I managed to get my tank cap flanges, drains and stiffeners riveted to the tank skins, but the rivets *feel* slightly proud. Allow me to explain...

I dimpled my tank skins using cleveland tank dies, which are slightly deeper than the standard die, and I did like Chad and swirled a tiny bit of sealant into each hole before instering the rivets. After riveting, I cleaned the outside of the tanks good so that there was no visible ring of sealant around the rivet heads. Everything looks good, but the rivets feel proud in that the edge of the rivet seems to be more exposed than normal. I checked them with a straight edge and they are flush with the surrounding skin, but I think they feel proud because the sealant I swirled into the hole doesn't allow the rivet to sit as deep in the dimple as it normally would, and since I used tank dies, the dimple is slightly deeper. Clear as mud? You can kind of see what I am talking about here, the rivets aren't proud (relative to the skin), but you can see more edge than is typical.

This is the long way of asking... is this normal? I started to think that maybe I shouldn't be cleaning up so much of the sealant that surrounds the rivets heads, that way the edge of the rivet won't feel proud/sharp.

Thoughts?

Most all of mine are the same way Brad. I chocked it up to sealant sitting in the dimple. Even with the tank dies (which I did not use), the sealant will make that rivet head sit up a bit. Mine are flush, but you can "feel" most of them as well. I would say it's normal...not sure you could get 'em any deeper with sealant in there.

Thanks Chad! I suspected this was normal for the reasons you give, but anytime I see something new, I like to ask questions (especially with the tanks).

Later!

what I did was after dimpleing (with regular dimple dies) was to shave just a couple of thousandths out of the dimple with a countersink

worked out great though there are still a few proud rivet heads

That is an idea, as long as it's going to be painted. Did anyone look closely at the homebuilt full scale P-51 that was on Aeroshell square all week? I think the majority of those rivets were shaved, and it was obvious. But really, who cares, it was a "real" P-51... 8)

Chad, I would agree. Looked like most of them had been shaved but like you say who cares, cool plane. Pretty awesome to see a "new" P51!

Brad, whenever I drive a rivet into a dimpled hole, I ALWAYS retouch the dimple with the hole deburring tool. This makes the rivet sit nice and flush.

I especially did this on the tanx!

CJ, I hear ya... normally I do that, but with the tank dies I was concerned about them being a little too deep if I also used the CS tool. Thanks!
