Shipping Costs for Quick Build Kit

Post by Jeff Moreau »

Can anyone give me a rough estimate as to the shipping costs for a quick build RV8 kit? Mine will be shipped from the factory to Virginia Beach, VA.
Is it cheaper to have it shipped to a trucking terminal and then pick it up from there, or is it better to have it shipped directly to my hanger?
Any information is greatly appreciated.

Jeff, I had a QB fuse only (no wings) shipped to Rockville, MD in January
2004 and the cost was about $1100 IIRC. There was a nominal discount
(about $50) for picking it up at the terminal instead of them delivering
it to my house (but, of course, I had to arrange the transportation
from the terminal to home. I used a flatbed tow truck - worked great).
The cost for the complete QB kit will be higher, of course, since there is
a second crate for the wings. The crate for the 6A QB fuse was about
4'x4'x16' and was about 800 pounds.

Dave, fly up here with John when he comes! There is a nice place on the water in downtown Plymouth we can go to for lunch!

Patti, I assume you will be joining us as well!

Make sure you figure out how to get it off the truck if it is delivered to your house or hangar. A guy I know just got an RV-10 quickbuild and had to get a forklift to get it off the truck.

Most trucking companys will deliver to your home but you need a good size forklift to unload it. I bought a quickbuild RV-6A and hired a guy with a beaver tail truck bed to haul it from the trucking terminal to my home. It cost me $75 and was well worth it. A beaver tail truck bed can raise the front of the truck bed and then extend the truckbed down to the garage floor. He and I were able to slide the crates off the beavertail onto my garage floor. I had a 41/2' long 3" diamenter pipe and a hefty 5' long pry bar. I used that and a 4"X6" chunk of wood as a fulcrom. My wife and I were able to move the boxes around in our garage fairly easily.

One friend of mine almost dropped his RV-8 Fuselage off a standard truck trying to unload it with just his wife. My RV-6A Fuselage box weighed over 800 pounds. Van's has very accurated weight and box size meaurements on their web site.

Hire a beaver tail truck!
