Rudder Counterbalance location

Post by captain_john »

Ok, this is what I have:

Image

You can see my plans in the background. I suspect the counterbalance will act different depending how far forward/aft it is located and it seems that Van isn't particualr about it's location. Why is that?

Can someone tell me where they put theirs or clue me into what Van has in mind? I can call them on monday, but I want to put this to bed tomorrow.

Obviously I dont have your plans in front of me but from what I can see of your plans it looks like it goes towards the front of the counter balance arm. Is there something that Im missing ?

Ummmm yah... but there is no dimension showing the distance aft of the front edge.

This is the old -7 (folded trailing edge) style. Since then the plans have come a long way!

Ah I understand your question ...

Well, being the jr builder here Im sure someone else will step in. To me it seems implied that it would go as far forward as possible. I would think the farther forward the bigger the arm which would mean more resistance to flutter and better balance. Thoughts ?

Hmmmm, yup yup yup...

I can do that. I agree with the thinking. I was going to do that anyways as shown in the photo. It is just that I wanted something called out on the plans to confirm my (our) suspicions.

BTW, I see the prominent link to this site from Van's. GREAT STUFF! Was that part of a bribe?

Wouldn't it be nice if the company would log in and handle support via this forum!?! Any words on that?

No bribes. However, our link is not permanent. Because we arent official Van's wont put a permanent link up. That is understandable as they cant control the content and what people post here. However, I do like your idea of having them using this as a medium to answer questions, etc. Maybe some of you guys could get together and ask bring that idea to Vans. That would be pretty cool.

BTW, I woke up today and my head wasn't up my a$$!

If you flip the weight end for end, the forward hole lines up with the prepunched one in the rib. All I had to do was drill the other one!

Much thanks to my neighborhood RV-8 builder, Dave R.!
