AeroShell Greases!

Post by captain_john »

I pay particular attention to lubricants whenever anything is supposed to slide, move or be cushioned. As I looked at my wheel bearings I wondered which grease to get. I am sold on the multipurpose application of AeroShell oils and thought to look towards their greases as well! I found this document:

http://www.shell-lubricants.com/product ... reases.pdf

My thoughts are, if this stuff is cost effective and multipurpose enough... I will make it my standard chassis lube for all my vehicles. In the document you will see that they have many different grades and types available. I printed it out and will read it while I do my cardio exercise this morning.

Spike, perhaps placing this document in the archives would be a good idea so we could reference it later?

So which are you gonna use?

I was told #22 for the tailwheel, etc by the 170 guys.
Others have recommended green boat trailer grease - that's what I used on the aileron bellcrank bushings.
I have also been told #33 is a good all around airframe grease...

There is some caution about mixing greases of certain types ... synthetics don't mix well with mineral greases. As a result they (synthetics) may be a bad idea in airplanes where there is regular attention given to greasing bearings, etc...

In the past, I have used mobil 1 on my sled, boat, JEEP and trailers. I like to have an "all purpose" grease on hand.

I think that I will keep mobil 1 for those applications and use AeroShell #5 for anything and everything airplane related.

It seems to have a good temperature range, cushioning ability and all around useage. The thinner ones have me a bit skeptical. I don't want the stuff to run out of the joints.

I do see that the #5 stuff has an obsolete MilSpec, but it is still being produced. That must be a testimony to it's quality, no?

You?

...the #22 is a good choice, though!

I could transition it to all my stuff from the synthetic mobil 1 stuff I have been using and it has GREAT low temp abilities!!! The -85F rating would be helpful around here right now!

 Enjoy Florida, you BUM!

You should get some of each. You can never have too much grease :-)

An old timer told me the way to know when there is enough grease in the 170 tailwheel is that it will spit grease at you when you walk past! :)

I am still undecided. Dunno what we use at annual - I'll have to ask the mech - it is whatever is in the gun / bearing packer.

Well, I firmly believe that the most important thing about lubricant is HAVING IT!

Having the RIGHT lubricant just makes life better.

My personal experiences (with KingAirs) Royco 22 is crap. It takes and holds water and doesn't last as long. My personal favorite for wheel bearings is Starplex. That is what Cleveland sends in their wheel assemblies. Double check for your uses though. RVs aren't KingAirs. As for the rest, I use Aeroshell products for everything I can. 33 and 33MS are good all around greases. Areoshell 7 for Flight Controls and Aeroshell 6 for the props. LPS makes excellent lubes, especially for those places that require constants lubes LPS1 is sort of like WD-40, 2 is thicker and 3 is a rust prevenative. LPS Cleaners are excellent too, You can clean anything with CFC Free and PreSolve works wonders on thick greasy stuff (like wheels and cowlings)
If anyone wants ANY Tech. Data on anything, let me know.
Just my two cents worth. I'm an A&P and I lube and clean more in a week than most Aircraft Owners (non-builders of course) do in a year or more.

Thanks for chipping in, John!

I either missed your introduction or you didn't post one. What are you working on? Are you investigating the kits, building or flying?

What model are you interested in?

Right Now I'm only working on KingAirs, no RV at this time (yet).
I am planning a RV-8A. I will be buying the preveiw plans here within a month. Hopefully start building the emp. kit this season.
