What do I really need?

Post by Andy G »

My wife and I are so excited about starting our RV we can hardly stand it. We are in the process of moving so, it'll be a little while before we can start banging rivets of our own (although we help bmurrish whenever we can).

We do want to start buying our tools but, we (I) have tons of questions. So let me start;

1: What do we really need. My buddy bought the "RV tool kit" from Cleavland but, he found that he either didn't need a lot of what came in the kit or, some of the items were a little over priced.

2: Rivet guns. Can someone explain what the number designators mean (2x, 3x, etc.)

3: Air Compressors?

4: Bench Grinders?

I think of new questions about every 5 minutes, I'll try and consolidate when I have some time.

Thanks,

-Andy & Christina

well, you need what you need when you need it  i bought the stuff i knew i would need before ordering the emp kit (rivet gun, drill-air or electric, squeezer, air compressor). i've heard that most of the RV tool kits are full of stuff, but you may not need all of it. correct me if i'm wrong fellas. i found a lot of what i needed on ebay, and everything has worked perfect so far, except the compressor i initially bought on ebay-don't do that.

for rivet guns, the 2X, 3X, 4X, and so on just mean the amount of "hammering" they provide or how hard they hit. a 3X is what you'll need. most 2X's are too weak to set larger rivets, and the 4X hits too hard for the 3/32 rivets. although, much can be done with the amount of air you feed it.

compressors!!! well, i'm still dealing with this, and it's been almost a year. i started out with a little craftsman 3 gallon. BIGGER IS BETTER, and i'm working on this. they are so freakin' expensive...

you'll need a bench grinder with a capacity for a 6" scotchbrite wheel. these are cheap. may also want to consider a drill press, and a band saw. a bench belt sander is nice too, but i don't have one yet, and haven't really had the need so far.

bring on more questions!!!

Hey Andy,

Here is a good link to check out if you haven't already done so.

P.S. I think Mark can get me a 15' trailer to pick up the jig in Loveland.

My $.02. I bought the RV tool kit from Cleveland. Looking back at that choice I wouldn't do much different. Avery tools I think provide another good choice. If I were to buy new again from either Cleveland or Avery I would buy just the tools that are uncommon to find locally and buy the rest from Home Depot or your favorite hardware store. I bought the same #811 scotch tape from Staples for about $2.00 less than I paid at Cleveland. That would be the tape you're going to use when back riveting. I have to say that having a compressor that can stay way ahead of demand is really a pleasantry. I'll leave that at that. Napa sells most of the scotch bright products you'll want accept perhaps for the large grinder wheels which I would definitely put on my list. Than again EBay seems to work for many.

Here is a list of tools that I have been keeping while working on my tail kit. Most everything listed here I have used in some shape or form. It would be a great starting place to get an idea of what will be necessary. A bit of it is more luxury, but honestly, youll use this stuff so much its nice to spend a bit extra at times (ie the Soux drill).

I also found that personally I think Avery tools are top shelf and buy stuff from them whenever they have it or are an alternative.

I agree with Spike, the Avery tools are tops. The one exception is that the Cleveland edge roller is much superior to the Avery version in about 90% of cases.

I bought an Avery RV tool kit, and have used every single tool in the kit. In addition, I got a longeron yoke and a hole-less yoke for my hand squeezer, and I wish that I had them from the beginning. I also purchased the Cleveland edge roller. With usual hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, etc.) and a bench grinder and a compressor, this has gotten me halfway through the wings.

I have had good luck with both Cleveland and Avery. Each has some unique tools that I have found helpful! I was also fortunate enough to purchase a number of tools from a friend who has his airplane flying. I have acquired other tools in addition. I have both a 2X & 3X Rivet gun. I use the 2X AN4263-? Rivets and the 3X on AN4704-? I also have both a hand squeezer and pneumatic squeezer and I wouldn't want to try building and RV with the pneumatic(sp?). Some people with good rivet buckers readily available may be able get by without the pneumatic.

I also have an old old wood band saw with an extra pulley added by my Brother about 40 years ago to slow it down enough to cut steel, aluminum etc. In addition I have a bench grinder with to a medium and fine buffing wheel installed, a combination belt sander/disc sander bench model. I also have a bench grinder with standard and wire wheel. I find an air drill a necessity and also have used both electric drill, cordless drill, and cordless screwdriver. All have been very helpful.

Several wood working tools have been helpful saw as circular saw, sabre saw, table saw, and dremel tool. The wood working tools and standard bench grinder I had before starting on my RV-6A.

The Update:

As mentioned in my 1st post; my wife and I are going to be living in an apartment for a while (not the best place for building).

Well I spoke w/ a coworker and fellow RV builder this afternoon and he is willing to let my wife and I use a part of his hanger AND his tools to get started on our tail!!!!!!

He has a 6 and wants to give my wife and I a ride this upcoming weekend. I initially approched him to talk about tools and he offered up the use of his tools and hanger!

The RV community..........very nice
