Left elevator Skeleton question

Post by captain_john »

Would someone please pull out their plans and look at the left elevator skeleton and answer this one for me?

Why does Van want us to install a 426AD3-3.5 (countersunk) rivet on the TRAILING edge of the skeketon to mate the E605 & E606 ribs and spar? It doesn't even say on my plans which way the flush side of the rivet is supposed to face. I am thinking it would be just fine with a round head 470 instead.

Anyone???

Hey cj,
I'm not home so I dont have my plans available but it might be needed to clear trim tab movement. Hope this helps, good luck

Ok, keep in mind that I have a 9. I also have to use the 426 rivets for the rib to spar attatchment in two places. In my case its because these are the root end ribs and the rivets must be flush to allow the elevator horns to lie flat on the forward face of the spar. If this is the case the shop heads would be formed on the inside of the elevator providing for a flush surface on the forward face of the spar. Something tells me though that this is probably a different thing that what you are facing since its clearly spelled out in my drawings and most likely yours too.

Ron, I will see if the trim tab has an interface issue in the AM, but I don't think there is one.

Spike, yes... that is on the leading edge. The trailing edge has no weldment to flush up against. That is the part I am talking about.

Gonna sleep on it.

Thanks guys,

I can't see any interference issues with the trim tab.

I suppose that it can't hurt any to install the 426 rivets with the flush head aft. Hard to make out in this picture, but I suppose it is what he did.

Why the flush rivets???

The Reason Van wanted this done was so the hinge pin that is safety tied to the spar sits flat.
