seat back hinge pins

Post by bruceh »

Probably a stupid question...

Spent the better part of my entire weekend building the 2 seat backs.
The plans don't really give any guidance on making the hinge pins for the seat back braces.

What is the best option?

1) Cut to 15.5" (hinge length on the RV-9) and leave straight?
or
2) Cut longer and put a 90 degree bend in one end?

I cut mine long so I could remove them. I wasn't sure if I was even going to use them. Also for painting reasons it's nice to take it apart.

Yup, cut 'em long and put a 1/2" bend in it to pull them out later, as shown in the plans. I've had mine in/out a couple times already and I'm only half way through the fuse, you'll definitely want the ability to pull the pins easily.

I cut mine short and then used some 4-40 pan head screws to screw into the hinge ends to keep the pin from working itself out. 4-40 screws thread perfectly into the piano hinge eyelets BTW! If I need to remove the hinges, I simple take out the two short screws, and then use something to push the hinge pin out.

I am working on the seat as well.
But I have a question about the F-715 Outer most seat rib. Can I rivet it to the skin now or does it need to wait for the outer skin?

Thanks
Dave

I would leave it off until after you have fitted the side skins. After everything comes back apart for deburring, then you can rivet it to the bottom skin and the F-705 bulkhead. The forward part and the sides get riveted to the side skins. Also, make sure you run a tap through the platenuts that eventually go on the seat flanges.
