Wing tip hinges

Post by Joe Parish »

Thinking about using hinge pins for my wing tips? I read Chads article in August 2012 Sport Aviation on his installation. He mentions needing .040 aluminum to use as a spacer between the wing skins and the hinge. I have a partial sheet of soft aluminum that is .030 thick, thinking of using that? Won't the fiberglass wing tips need to be sanded and pin holes filled etc. If the wing tip is sitting proud of the skin could it be sanded to be flush with the wing skin? Would that be way more work than just going with a thicker shim ? Thoughts appreciated.

I just used the piece of fiberglass that gets cut off as the shim, makes for a perfect fit as it's exactly the same thickness.

Joe,

Using the fiberglass as a shim worked great and is easy to do. Here is a picture of how mine looks on the wing side:

A complete write-up of how I did mine is at http://www.rvplane.com/?categoryid=3&dayid=567

Good luck!

Wing Tip Hinges Bill of Material

Post by Bear Creek Aviation »

Does anyone have a bill of materials to accomplish this on a set of RV7 wings?

Mike, Thanks for the pic and link to your write-up.

Terry, You will need to order some AN257-P3 hinge pin to suit your installation, use the fiberglass that you cut off the wing as a shim and then you will need some epoxy system. The west systems epoxy seems to be pretty popular. I believe you need the resin, hardener and some flox. This is off the top of my head so check Mike's link above to see how he did it or do a search on google for Chads RV-7 and you should be able to find his write-up on his sight. August 2012 issue of Sport Aviation has a article Chad wrote on his installation. The hinge pins need to be longer than the hinges. Good luck hope this helps. Added link to Chads site.
