Rudder lower fairing

Post by A2022 »

the model for the rudder shows the lower fairing interference, as designed and manufactured.

N531EM; I decided to bend the ends of the flange inward and tuck the fairing behind. seems to be good after 1000+ hrs. I like to trap parts, especially fiberglass end pieces that can interfere with the controls.

empennage intersection fairing lower panel is also trapped by the inspection plate. no chance a missing screw can allow this panel to rise up and interfere with the elevator control. residual stress in the panel and the airflow lower pressure in this area make it want to rise. a screw with no secondary locking feature (per the plans) is not robust for this critical area. better to trap the panel and rely on the inspection plate 6 panel screws that have secondary locking feature (locking nut plates).

On the RV-14 empennage, the plans (page 12-02) have you bend that lower part of the flange where the lower fairing attaches. The parts are common to the RV-9, so bend away!
