Trim access

Post by tshort »

Maybe I missed something in the instructions ...

When did you all prep / dimple / countersink / rivet the assembly for the cover plate for the trim access hole in the elevator?

I think it would have been better to have done so prior to back riveting the plate onto the skin ... ask me how I know. I was able to do it with some finagling, but would've been much easier before.

Well, I have always said that the left elevator/trim tab/trim servo portion of the plans are pretty sketchy.

Me? I just sorta did what made sense to me after asking questions, looking at other people's planes, reading the plans and playing with the components.

In answer to your question, when I got frustrated with the elevator, I worked on the trim tab, when I was frustrated with the trim tab, I worked on the servo, when that frustrated me, I drank rum.

So, did you put all the nutplates on before attaching the trim access plate to the skin?

No, I didn't.

I pneumatically squeezed them afterward.

Yeah, that's where I am.
There is one nutplate that the 3", longeron, or 3" no hole yoke won't fit so I'm gonna back rivet it (elevator is not assembled yet).

Just for future reference for those not there yet, I can't think of a reason not to do the dimpling / countersinking / nutplates before riveting to the skin...
