Back in Action

Post by Womack2005 »

After we had our 3rd child (now 9 months old) and I had to travel a lot for work and a bunch of other family related stuff, I had to put the project on hold. I am happy to report that I am finally back in action. I finally finished the Rudder and am about halfway thru the Elevators.

And today I just ordered the WINGS !!!

Anybody have wing stands they wanna get rid of 8)

Also, I live in Appleton and go to the Prime Quarter on occasion. Good eats.

Thanks Chad. I remember I was only about a month behind you, and now you already have your tanks done?!?!? I am looking at your progress and it is amazing! Great job!

Yes, I will definately be coming to the PQ. It is only 2 miles from the house. 8)

Also, wanted to ask how long it took to get your wings. Van's quoted me an 8 week lead time this morning. What did they tell you and what actually happened?

Thanks
Will

Hi Will, welcome back!

It took about 7 weeks for mine to arrive.

Good to hear from you again!

Thanks CJ! Good to be back :P

I should have enough to keep me busy until then. I just hope it doesn't take longer than advertized.

Thanks Will! I am SO happy that those tanks are done!!

My wings also shipped to my door in about 7 weeks. I wouldn't expect any longer than that. Mine actually came about a week and a half early. 8) I got a notice in the mail (on a Friday) three weeks before I was expecting them to arrive, that told me to expect ABF to deliver them within the business week. Turned out being a week and a half due to a weekend, but still early.

Thats good news Chad.

I'm thinkin I am gonna half to set up the metal wing stands. They look like they worked out great for you. Where is the best place to look for a "how to" on those? Do any plans or specs exist for them?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the metal stands are the trick!

Here's a link to a great thread from Rudi Greyling on VAF on how to-

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/s ... php?t=5058

He's the originator of these beauties! I built mine to 48" rather than 60", but that's the only change I made.

Thanks Chad! Looks very good 8)

Couple of questions: It looks like you use steel angle to actually atatch to the wing? Any interference issues with skins?

Also, is this really sturdy enough? It doenst shake at all when the riveting starts?

I used inch and a half steel angle to attach to the one inch AL angle on the post. This gave me enough space to attach without cutting the notch out of the angle that most are running in to.

I did modiy the lower bracket a little as well, now that I think about it. I used steel again, and built a small platform for the rear spar to rest on.

That gets clamped down tight with a piece of paper between the platform and the spar, so as not to scratch it.

Sturdy as a huge rock! I can't move the posts AT ALL! With the wings attached to it, it is VERY sturdy.
