Some future builders

Post by JohnR »

Well we had visitors tonight at our shop. Luke has been in 4-H all through school and tonight was his last 4-H meeting as he heads to college soon. HE offered to do a presentation on the airplane and the kids (and adults) all loved it. Here are a couple of photos of him showing them the wings and then how a cleco works. Lot of questions and interest. I think they all had fun. :)

And yes, that is the second fuel tank settingthere ready to rivet together. We are going to hit it tomorrow evening if all goes according to plan.

That is absolutely great  that you and your son have taken the time to possibly spark some aviation interest in your community.

I wish Luke all the best in college, I'm sure he'll do well.

Will, we do enjoy the shop! Once we got all the motorcycle racing stuff sold off it seems a lot bigger.

Dave, I think some interest is sparked for sure. Actually one of the girls, about 13 or 14 years old, has been taking some lessons. Her Dad was a pilot and died a couple of years ago (non aviation related) and I believe it is her way of connecting with his memory. She takes lessons as she can afford them and wants to be an astronaut someday. :) I may have to drop by the place she flies and make her money go a little farther one of these days. She is a good kid and her Mother is trying to help her accomplish her goals but money is tight it sounds like.

I passed your good wishes on to Luke and he appreciates them. We will miss him around here.

Spike, it was pretty cool. All the kids had tons of questions and surprisingly good ones at that. Not like most adults who ask "Are you really going to fly in that thing?" The kids asked about how you got the rivets smooth, how far you could go without stopping, do you have to paint it, what are the different colors on the clecos, etc. Yes, a lot of kid type questions, but they left knowing a lot more about experimental aircraft than when they came in. It was a lot of fun. I thought I might invite the group back again next year to see progress even though neither of my kids will be in 4H any longer.
