I don't have anything to bend as yet, but when we do could we use an 8' sheetmetal brake that we have access to?

I haven't needed a brake yet, but I suppose that when the fuse/instrument panel portion comes along there will be lots of custom work to do.

Sorry to resurect this thread, I plan on using a 1/8" dowl inside the rudder trailing edge when I bend it. When doing this, do you want the edge to be right in the crease near the hinges or do you move it a few inches away, like the picture in CH 5?

This is Wicked Stick's brake setup that I have been raving about:

This is Thermos and WS (left and right repectively) bending Thermos' trailing edge.

As you can see, this isn't the brake Van specifies, as it has no handles but substituted threaded rods for compression.

I also is not a "conventional" brake used for sheet metal work.

WS made this on his own and it works very accurately!

I am so glad that the 9 doesnt need that. I had to do it for the training kit and did not like the process, or, at least my ability to do the process :)

So the -9 elevators have a riveted trailing edges as well as the rudder?

Sorry to be so dense, but I always thought they had folded elevator trailing edges. It was only the rudder that was riveted.

BTW, it really ain't so hard to to bend 'em. I say it is easier than riveting them.

CJ, From what I can see in the picture, you have the ribs attached when you do the bending. I already made the Van's bending brake, so plan to use it. I bought the 1/8" dowl and I am ready to bend. Should I keep the trailing edge against the hinged edge on the brake, or move it a few inchs inward?

Yes, attaching the SPAR and stiffeners WE BELIEVE keeps te trailing edge TRUER during the process.

I also believe the dowel is KEY in keeping the edge from creasing.

Personally, I would start off with the trailing edge fully inserted and move it out incrementally as you reposition and reapply pressure.

Hope this helps!

While I was down at Vans yesterday, I heard that Van is trying out a set of elevators made like the "9"'s, but for the RV-8. He wants to try a set on "Dilbert" the test mule RV-8. Evidently, he is interested to see if stick forces will be increased with those sharp, clean trailing edges.

I always thought the folded trailing edges were a little bogus, that is, until I looked at the Cessna's rudder trailing edge, and then I felt better. However, I do know that the aerobatic guys like squared off crisp trailing edges for precise flow separation, and I wonder about these rounded ones.

The deed is done. I bent the trailing edge on my -8 rudder with no problems. I think the dowl trick is a great idea, even with just the bending brake from the Van's plans.

Bill,
Yes, I am always surprised when they turn out OK. I also used the dowels which are a new trick to some of the "old hands" around here. I've never tried a bend without a dowel so I am curious about what it is supposed to do.

Some early builders didn't use a dowel and also ended up making the bend more like a 3/32 diameter rather than 3/32 radius. So their trailing edges came out sharper. I bent mine using a 5/32 steel wire from my model airplane shop. Kind of tough to bend but they came out fine.

Ahh Mikey,

I see! That's funny, I also used model airplane stuff for my bending. There seems to be some crossover going on between models and bigger models.
Thanks for the info.
