Looking for GRT EIS info

Post by RVNewsletter »

Anyone know of a good Web site that's documented the installation of the Grand Rapids EIS 4000? There are things in the documentation supplied that aren't quite as specific as I would like and I'd like to read how some others have it documented.

For example, there's a notation there that says something about not grounding the oil temperature gauge and the ignition kill switch in such a way that it could be disconnected from the engine and still be grounded to each other. I'm not sure what that means other than one of those should be grounded to the engine case.

Also, there's two bags with two oil pressure sensors, one labeled 80 psi and one labeled 150 psi, and no indication what factors into which is to be used. My engine has a top oil pressure of 115, does that mean I use the 150? I presume so. Perhaps one is a fuel pressure sensor. It doesn't really say.

And is any sealant/anti-seize used on those?

yeah, all of that. And so much more.

Bob,

I don't know about a good website that fully documents how to install the EIS4000. However, I put one in my RV, and I will try to help you out the best I can.

The two main documents I used to wire up the EIS were:

http://rvplane.com/pdf/GRT_EIS/fig5bb16.pdf (EGT's and CHT's)

http://rvplane.com/pdf/GRT_EIS/fig5ab16.pdf (Everything Else)

The second document states the 150PSI sender is for oil pressure. The 80 PSI sender is for fuel pressure (documented in http://rvplane.com/pdf/GRT_EIS/OILPRES.pdf ).

I was able to wire up my EMAG directly to the EIS, without needing a resistor or anything else to interface. I would check with Sandy at GRT for how they recommend doing so.

One thing you need to consider is how you use your auxiliary inputs. There are 6 of them. I use mine as follows:
1) Fuel Pressure
2) Left Fuel Level
3) Right Fuel Level
4) Manifold Pressure
5) Current (I used the Hall-Effect sensor, not the shunt).
6) Flap Trim.

I tried to put as much of the EIS documentation as I could find on my website at the bottom of this page: http://rvplane.com/docs/

Good Luck,

Thanks. I've got the EIS documentation. Don't care much for the graphics.

also trying to figure out what accomodations need to be made on installations of one mag and one lightspeed.

And did you put a thread sealant on the fuel/oil pressure sensor?

Bob,

You can wire the EIS directly to the Lightspeed for its tach signal, but when you do a mag check on the lightspeed ignition, you will loose your RPM indication on the EIS. It's not a limitation of the EIS, its just the lightspeed is the tach sensor, and when you cut power to it, well, it doesn't have the ability to output tachometer pulses to the EIS. I wouldn't say thats all that bad. When you do a runup, you can always hear when you have a fouled plug. However, if you want to have a RPM indication always with the EIS, you need to get your tach signal elsewhere. Two options here are Van's sells a tachometer transducer which connects to the back of the engine (IE VTACHGEN 2 and IE VTACHGEN 12). I also heard there is a tach transducer that connects to where the MAG would of mounted that the lightspeed replaced.

Alternatively, I just saw this on the other board. You might be able to connect your lightspeed and your mag to the EIS so you will always have tach input. Sounds like you need to call up GRT to get more info.
I just talked to GRT about this last week, because I had a wiring diagram that showed 1 tach input but a config guide that said there were 2. Turns out their latest version of EIS software will allow for 2 tach inputs directly to the EIS. Cost is $100 for the software upgrade. Call Sandy at GRT. You'll have to send your unit back to them.
I put fuel-lube on the fuel pressure sensor and thread sealant on the oil pressure sensor.
