The word "love" is overused.

How easily we say we love this and that, no matter how little we are actually involved or invested. Do we truly enjoy doing it, or do we just say we "love" it because it sounds more passionate? The word "love" carries many undertones, yet it is often thrown around without thought. Originally, love is defined as an extreme affection towards someone or something; however, this is not how most of us use it most of the time. It has become just another word we add to emphasize our enthusiasm, often without genuine meaning.

Love is frequently used at the wrong time, in the wrong context, and often in the wrong place. We tend to say that we love food, clothing, television shows, and even colors. Being fond of something does not mean you love it—it simply means you like it, enjoy it, or find comfort in it. Love, in these cases, becomes an overstatement.

Some exaggerated or misguided uses of the word:

I love my socks.

I love my toothbrush.

I love my box-end wrench.

I love my fiberglass epoxy resin.

I love my cleco.

I love my biscuits and gravy.

Statements like these dilute the true meaning of the word. When you hear such expressions, it may reflect a limited vocabulary or a lack of consideration for the depth the word actually holds.

Let us be more thoughtful with our language. Words carry weight, and love, perhaps more than any, deserves to be used with care and sincerity.

Also, as the brain deteriorates, we tend to go to one phrase words that attempt to cover a wide range of emotions as a cover up (because we cannot think of other words), so be careful if you find yourself doing that.
