Thoughts on the panel ...

Well, since I dont think the G900 is all that realistic, I figured Id boil down the functionality of the 900 that I really want, and go traditional for the rest. Here is what I came up with. Its probably more than goes into the typical RV, but, its surprisingly accurate for what I want. Of course Im far enough out that things will most likely change. However, I really like it. Take a gander.

Looks great Spike! What's the thing to the left of the Trio? Alt hold?

My proposed panel at this point is EXTREMELY simple and light...
I have all the gauges, the 295, and the Xponder will be a KT-79 digital that I just bought. Engine monitor is still a question mark, and the AP is a question mark. The KLN-135 GPS/Com is on hand, but in another airplane right now. Other than that, that's my plan...

Yeah, its trio's alt hold/climb control. Its a bit clunky, but I can deal with it. In looking at whats out there the Avidyne really answers most of what I want, especially if I can convince myself to splurge for the TAS600.

Spike, that is a GOOD ol' fashioned panel!
Any 1990's airplane would be STYLIN' with a panel like that!

I've not came up with my panel layout yet. Another thing to do.

Can anyone weigh in here?
Here is my proposed panel:
Affordable Panels ... uh panel
Trio AP with alt hold
FlightDek 180
The lightbar above the Dynon 180 is going to be an annunciator panel a la Paul Dye
Garmin 496 (or whatever they have by then)
Analog ASI and ALT
Garmin radio and transponder (may be replaced by more financially realistic comm and transponder)
Dynon D10A, cross connected and able to swap displays
That's may panel. Until I change my mind. Again.

Scott, I like it!
I think you can't do the cross linking thing with the old, little Dynon.
It is more of a standalone thing.

Spike,
Excellent panel, looks very much like my thoughts for my 9A; traditional flight instruments with as many fancy boxes in the radio stack as I can afford.
Is that a blue knob next to the throttle? Are you going constant-speed prop?
I haven't thought much about the autopilot yet, although I am leaning towards trutrak.

John,
Im thinking that I will go with a CS prop as long as I can swing it. Originally I wanted simple and was thinking FP sensenich, but I dont want to deal with their RPM restriction. Out of the CS props, the 3 bladed Whirlwind has my attention. The whole system setup is under 30 lb, and its not quite as pricey as the other three bladed cs props out there.

Actually, here is an update. When I did the above one I wanted an HSI that would cost tons of dough. It dawned on me today that the EFIS Lite not only has that, but also doubles an an AI if need be. Excellent! Now i dont need the backup AI.
Walaaa..

Wow, all nice panels. Makes me feel like my panel will be stark. I plan to use dynon flight dek 180 efis/ems combo. For the radios i ordered the garmin package 1..gps 396 w/ panel dock, sl-40 com, and the gtx-327 w/ak 350 encoder. I think this is all I will need for day night vfr flights. the gps is capable of weather and terrain plus XM Radio. The com has a built in 2 place intercom also.Whole panel should come in under 10k.
So, what ya think am I missing anything?

Sounds reasonable to me. Will you be doing long cross country work in the plane?

Hey John,
we plan to use the plane mostly for fun, aerobatics and short hops in the New England area. One of my brothers lives in eastern michigan and that would be about the longest regular cross country. Of course we will make the trip to sun n fun and maybe even oshkosh. If my priorities change or I hit powerball I can always upgrade I just want to fly it NOW!!

Sounds to me like your panel is right on then.

Actually you can!
DynonSupport wrote:You have the right combination in mind. With a FlightDEK-D180 and a second EFIS-D100 or EFIS-D10A, you afford yourself completely redundant primary flight instruments, and the engine instruments can be displayed on either instrument as well.
For technical reasons, namely that you can't hook some of the engine sensors to multiple instruments, you can't really go with two FlightDEK-D180s, but then again, most people probably agree that it is not as critical that your engine instruments be backed up.
If the second EFIS-D100 loses comm with the FlightDEK-D180, then it would annunciate that it's lost the EMS, and you'd simply push a button to get back to the primary instrument display.

Scott, that's cool!
It is good to hear that they are engraining their technology into previous generations of their equipment!
I would still have been on board with them if only they came out with a heated pitot. It was my only reason for leaving them.
I was thinking the little display would be nice as a redundant display!

I know a guy on the inside there. They have some really good things in the works. I wish I could share but I don't want to get my "source" in any trouble. Suffice it to say Dynon ain't done with the cool bling just yet. They have more up their sleeve. Can't wait.

Scott,
Is that a Tip-Up XL modular panel from Fabian? He sent me some email pictures of one a few months back. I'm ready to order a panel, but having a Tip-Up I was concerned with the left rib location. Your panel looks great. I also would like to put in a Dynon 180. Just curious your reasons for locating the A/P and Alt hold on the left side? I'm thinking of putting mine more in the center to allow both seats good access, or maybe that's not such a good idea.

Hey John, I am building a "tipper" as well.
Sounds like you are a bit ahead of me, but the way I understand it is that the panel support ribs CAN BE relocated to suit your panel needs!
I plan/hope to do some kind of custom design/build work behind there to allow me to place the EFIS front and center of the pilot's view.
Have you looked into doing this or is it WAAAAY more complicated than meets the eye?
