Sad Friday at OSH

Just got back to the rental house here at OSH. Two P-51's collided on the runway after a mock Reno race. Precious Metal and Stang were landing, it appears Precious Metal struck Stang's tail while PM was still in flight just above the runway. Stang was pushed into the weeds and came to rest on it's nose. PM entered a quick roll to the right and impacted the ground inverted. Stang's pilot walked away, PM's pilot did not survive. :(

We were in the ATC seminar when it happened. Didn't know about it until just now when I came across a news item on the web. Very sad. :(

There will be a press briefing today at 0100. This was just horrible and our prayers will be with their families.

It was horrible. Thermos and I were sitting beside the runway awaiting the rollout runs. Someone said, "There is smoke at the end of the runway"! We didn't hear a thing from about a mile away. We then thought about which planes we had seen return and which ones we hadn't seen yet. We then knew who it was.

It is really amazing that the announcers kept an upbeat tone to the event. I don't know how they do it. I am sure it isn't easy.

Brad and I saw it happen, being just a couple hundred yards from it. Terrible.

Just heard Jim Leroy was killed today in Ohio...

Sad weekend for the airshow community. :(
