I just said Goodbye

Post by papakeith »

yesterday was a tough day. It was the day I had to make the decision to put my dog Ben to sleep.

Ben was a good boy, and a great big brother to Zach. Unfortunately, his body was just not up to the task anymore. To see him laying around you would have thought he was fine. Truth was, he couldn't hardly get himself standing anymore.

In any event this morning we made the decision to put him down. I called the vet and arranged a time(damn hard phone call). Then when the time came, we all took him to the vet and were there for his last moments.

He was laid to rest on the farm, next to some other great puppies that had gone before him.

I'm going to miss that old boy. Gonna miss him a bunch

so sorry

Hi PapaKeith - I'm so sorry to hear about Ben. You need to know that by making that phone call, you did the right thing. It was hard on you, but it was the right thing to do for him, and that is more important. Sounds like his quality of life had slipped away, so he needed the rest. We've lost 3 furry family members (made the call twice) and its not easy but its the right thing to do. Ben was depending on you to help him when he couldn't help himself. We're so sorry that you had to lose Ben, but glad that you did it the right way and kept him from more suffering.

Maybe you'll be like us and someday get a new addition (but not a replacment)?

Sorry again,

dave

Man...PK, sorry to hear of your loss. I love animals (dogs especially) more than a lot of people I know, and to have to go thru this has to be tough. This is my biggest fear of being a dog owner, but just as the others have said, you did the right thing, and Ben has crossed the rainbow bridge. He'll be waiting for you... :(

thanks guys.

Ben was a trooper to the end. Even tried to give chase to the vets cat just before we went into the office. :)

The picture above was from two years ago. Zach his "little Brother" is in the background on the stairs.

Keith,

Its always a tough decision and process, but its never worse than living without the dog to begin with. Its amazing that as time passes, you only remember the good things the dog did, not the bad things.

Good Luck

It's a tough thing to do. I had to put my dog down a few years ago on my birthday no less. She was so far gone she bit me when I tried to pick her up. I reported to ER to get a tetnus shot. The big burley ER nurse and I were both tearing up as he gave me the shot. All that to say, I know how you feel. It's never easy, even when it's the right thing.
