Step installation question...

All -

I'd like a little help here.

I'm installing the steps on my RV-9A and started tightening the bolt that goes through the UHMW plastic block and the 1 1/2" dia steel tube on the step assembly.

I noticed that the sides of the plastic block are getting "sucked in" resulting in a concave surface long before I get to the proper torque.

My concern is if I apply the right torque - I may crack the plastic block - but if I stop at a lower torque - the self-locking nut may vibrate loose. I did not see any special torque specs in the instructions.

The distortion is less than 1/32" and I have 2-3 threads showing beyond the end of the nut. Since the baggage floor plates permanently cover this up - I will not be able to see if it becomes a problem later on.

What did you do - and how did it work for you?

Thx, Lorin D

It is hard to torque the bolts that go through the plastic blocks. There are more than a few of these in the build. I would get it tight and call it good. As long as there are a thread or more showing past the nylock nut it won't come off. Put a dab of torque seal inspection lacquer on there and you are done.
