Hey all
Been looking (lurking) around this and some other rv forums for quite some time. This one seems to be the best for for me, good questions/answers, most importantly little to no flames and overbearing egos.
I recently commited to building an rv-9. I'm 38 years old and I have been dreaming, drooling over, and wishing to build one of these since the 6 was pretty much new... So yeah safe to say most of my life... The good thing is that in that time the kits have gotten better (easier) and they developed the 9 which aligns more with the type of flying that I envision. I'm not really interested in aerobatics, having flown for the last 10 years as a c130 flight engineer I know my stomach would not handle it well. But am interested in "shrinking the country" after 18+ years in Uncle Sam's flying circus I have friends spread from coast to coast. And I'm just about as geographically separated as I can get from my family in this country.
On Dec 1 2012 I was finally able to make to Van's (3rd attempt in 2012) and do the factory tour, and a fantastic demo ride... I managed to drag two innocent victims along with me. One of which is most likely going to build a 14 soon as the rest of the kits are released, or at least priced. Understandably hard to commit at this point to what would amount to writing a blank check..
Anyway we left the factory that day with 4 toolbox kits my rv-9 emp kit and 3 RV grins.
Unfortunately we were in the NW doing deployment prep training so upon return to FL I didn't even have time to unpack and inventory my kit. Had to get packed up to come to the 'Stan... Been about as productive as you can be here.. Brought toolbox kits with us and two of them have been built using our sheet metal shop's tools...
That and lots of research time. I know that I want to expand the fuel capacity so I'll be paying close attention to Pat's rv8 build log and Greg's rv-9 log for that part of the build especially. Also lucked onto an engine already a high time but serviceable running O-320 E2D pulled from a 172 in November for upgrade. With all accessories and it is even set up for mechanical fuel pump...
Yes I will be going tail wheel as I have more tail wheel ppl time than trike and don't want to worry about NLG strength depending on where I choose to fly.
Anyway I have rambled enough for now.
Thanks for the hospitality...
