Yellow Springs Ohio, landing Springfield SGH.... a quick flight, after airborne at 3500 cruise ETE was 12 minutes, I better get the airport info pronto. sure, beats over an hour drive in heavy traffic. -6C overnight so I kicked on the sump heater a couple hours before I arrived at the airport. the airplane was ready to go. the bike ride and the breakfast were perfect. Glen Helen Park and The Yellow Spring was more than I expected, beautiful. I felt the history here was completely beyond my comprehension, ancient. adding a bike ride to these plane trips multiplies the fun factor by three, no more than that, by a factor of five! I feel like I am cheating. Cool weather gear was perfect. Can't wait for the next trip to roll on some more miles. tomorrow the weather looks perfect, but I need to help my wife clean the house for Thanksgiving.

A ski helmet with ear flaps is a good bike helmet in the cool weather. no, it was better than good, perfect.

the big stone at Glen Helen is an erratic left by a glacier. think of the forces that tossed those stones around. the rock there is mud stone, laid down at the bottom of a shallow sea, millions of years ago.

Springfield SGH is a really nice airport. I'll be back with my wife.

I had a little buddy on the way home and gave him a flight snack. how in the hell did you survive a -10C night two nights ago? a smart fly, enjoy the ride in the sunshine. :)

note: after I returned home I was reminded how good the Sam Adams Winter pack selection is this year, with a Cold IPA and a Black Lager. they hit it out of the park this year.

at the skate park, someone wrote: thick Bitch next to LOVE :) I notice these small things.

when you're piloting an aircraft, it's all business. when you're riding a bike, it's all fun. note: there is nothing wrong with just having fun!

there is a lot of stuff packed in there. I carry spares for everything but in 1000+ hrs, I have never needed anything. I need to get rid of some stuff, but even with all that stuff and full tanks, I get 1800 fpm consistent climb out on cool days.

my wife said, get me one of those. I think I am going to go with the new 2023 Zizzo Forte (the 2022 Forte gear system is below par, don't buy it) so I can load it up with bags for long distance travel. she can ride my tricked out Liberte. green is my favorite color. why green? .... because grass is green and pleasing to the eye. :) the only reason I post this is because I believe the Zizzo is a good value, based on my limited testing.

I had a new yellow 79 Camero at one point in my life and everyone was crashing into it. the insurance person said a yellow car was the most likely to be collided with. I believe it!

RVPlasticParts supports the Ukrainian Army and relief efforts. This Winter is going to be hard for them, but Spring will come. Russia is simply a bad country with a Dictator, aligned with Iran and North Korea. When I had some support for Ukraine on "Vans Airforce" it was deleted, then I left. If you don't support the fight for Freedom and Democracy, what do you support? Many American soldiers paid with their lives for Freedom and Democracy. Some may say "I am independent and don't support anything", thereby becoming irrelevant. Don't be irrelevant, it leads to an early death, have a bigger purpose. Something more than what type of primer did you use, BTW I didn't use any. Eliminate the primer, it will just make you sick anyway, and send that money to Ukraine to help them thru the Winter. Getting a foldable bike has been on my to-do list for a while. Potomac Airpark (W35) is a short distance from the C&O canal towpath. The longer I have the RV, the more and more I need reasons to fly it. All of the local restaurant runs have got boring over time.

Back when I was looking at folding bikes, this guy put together a nice spreadsheet comparing the differences between them in a thorough manner.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... Khknc/edit

My dream folding bike is made by Carbo - e-bike + lightweight. The price near $3000 is now lightweight however! May have to finagle a way to put this on the corporate Amex as "engineering supplies" :)

Green County Airport (I19) = The Aerial Gateway to the US Air Force Museum. the line guys said they have 2 cars for guests to take to the museum. official limit is 2 hrs, but they don't mind if it's out for the entire afternoon. you need more than 2 hrs at the Air Force Museum, trust me. he said this was the first day that both cars were out being used at the same time in 5 months. so, if you are flying to see the Air Force Museum, stop at I19 and see Patches the cat.

I rode my bike from the airport to Xenia for breakfast and to look around. I found some a nice side dirt/leaves trail on the way and tested the Zizzo. it passed with flying colors. the remainder was a dedicated bike path. Xenia is the hub for the Cincy, Dayton, Columbus.... Ohio bike path network that links the cities together. it was started by Ed Dressler, by a rails-to-trails programs. the bike path was being used today my many. I stopped counting after 100. the temperature this morning was -4C with heavy frost but it warmed up to 12C and was a perfect day. I think I am getting close to 100 miles on the Zizzo, and it's been good. I ordered a new 2023 Zizzo Forte (stay away from the 2022 model, the shifter is junk) that has a +60 load capacity, wider tires for gravel, a rear rack and fenders and should be better for touring... but it is 4 lb heavier so it will be more difficult to load in the plane. loading one Liberte (Lee-bear-tay) in the plane is easy for me.

I had forgotten that Green County Airport runway has a road underneath.

I always fly home feeling good after these trips. I found myself breaking into my "John Wayne dance", sitting in the cockpit. I didn't burn much fuel on this trim.

best method to get a feel for an area:
1. walking (but it takes too long)
2. bicycle
3. motorcycle
4. car
5. airplane (you see it, but you don't feel it)

getting ready for a cold ride on Thurs, -6C low, 3C high. trying to find my min temperature for riding this bike. I plan to cover about 20 miles. I find I loose 10 psi tire pressure after a couple days, so I topped these off to the max pressure, 110 psi. the bag is good because it keeps the plane clean, and you can vacuum it. I noticed the handlebar was not aligned with the front tire about 1 degree. it probably became mis-aligned from bouncing the bike over curbs, wheelies and stuff at the skate park. I was easily able to correct the alignment by the two clamp screws on the front post. when you tighten these screws go easy and alternate torque until the final torque is reached on both. the Zizzo is locked and loaded.

Steve,

Do the tires have any sealant in them? Maybe that could help you with your loss of air pressure? When I used to ride mountain bikes, we swore by Stan's:

does this stuff work with tubes? any concern about the valve stem seam seal becoming "unsealable" over time?

Springfield OH ... what a gem! bike trails and paths all over the town and nice little shops to eat. I also visited the the Springfield Museum of Art. it was -6C this morning but it warmed to 3C during the day. it was cool on the bike for the first 15 minutes but then I warmed and needed to open my jacket to cool. overall, these temperatures are perfect if the winds are light, and they were today. a perfect day and I didn't burn much fuel, a 20-minute flight. money left over for coffee and chocolate. sometimes the nicest things are in your own backyard, just need to be able to get to them. if I can get another day like today, I'm planning for a 40-mile ride and open up the bike.

I like having one nav screen scale large and the other small, both within easy viewing. set the auto update so both flight plans stay synched thru the aircrafts wireless network (update one and the other auto updates, that drives the auto pilot). Ifly GPS used $350, tablet used $100 ebay. that's a lot of bang for the buck.

50 hrs on this oil and I having a hard time justifying changing it. CHT's were perfect for this altitude with the cowl inlet air dams, 325F.

the bike trail has dedicated restrooms and a bike mechanic station. the air pump worked, just checking, I didn't need it.

BTW: my wife said the dark chocolate caramel with sea salt was some of the best. I'm just a chocolate delivery service. :)

Zizzo Forte - folding bike compared to Liberte

doublers added to the Forte frame (green) to increase the bike load rating from 240 to 300 lb. Zizzo panniers look good. fill the panniers with Twinkies are the nearest convivence store! the Zizzo bike bag is very high quality but weighs 6 lb. (but ultimate protection) and is too stiff to easily fit in the plane, don't do it. the aftermarket bag is better, 3 lb, and good for loading in the plane. I'll swap the Forte tires for Schwalbe Marathons' (1.75, currently 1.95) that are better for high speed on the road. the Liberte tire is 1.5. the max pressure rating for the original Forte tire is 65 psi and is good for gravel. the Forte front fork is steel where the Liberte is alum. the Forte is a sturdier bike and good for touring, but I like the ultra-lightweight Liberte. my wife is sold on the Forte. there is no pedaling interference with Forte panniers installed on the rear rack. the Forte has fenders that will keep your wife clean on a wet road. also, the Forte comes with upgraded grips standard, and they seem good. the revo shift on the Forte is high quality. give me a lightweight Liberte with high-speed Schwalbe Marathon tires and you will never see me again, because you will be left in the dust :), but the Forte will be better when loaded and on long touring rides.

the Forte tire axels are bolt-on where the Liberte are quick-release clamped. preferences vary on this, but I like clamped, where I can have both wheels off in 30 seconds. clamped are not so good if you are worried about theft.

I'm not sure how the small Zizzo bag is to be used. maybe wheels only? if you want to completely disassemble.

I think they got it right; these bikes are really fun machines.

Zizzo Liberte & Forte (2023) - folding bike

a couple more observations of the Zizzo Forte. the overall frame wall thickness is increased (tap test) over the Liberte, and some feature dimensions of the frame are bigger. the Forte wheel rims are wider than the Liberte. the Forte is a significantly different bike and much stronger but heavier than the Liberte. I was able to load both bikes in the baggage compartment of the RV9, but I needed to remove the wheels from the Liberte and remove my tow bar from the mount to do so. since the Liberte wheels are clamp-on style, it was quick. I needed to fold the Liberte into the suitcase fold. then I threw the wheels on top. I should probably get a dedicated bag for the wheels. the last thing I did was to load the Forte with the aftermarket bag with the RV9 seats in their flying position and it was doable but just barely. the Forte rear rack adds some dimension to the bike for rotating it into the baggage compartment. for loading the Forte with the rear rack, one should move the passenger seat back forward and out of the way. things are looking good for traveling with the wife for an excursion with the bikes and also for one person traveling long distance with the Forte and baggage for touring. I think folding bikes are really neat mechanical widgets. if you're not too heavy and don't plan on carrying much baggage on the bike, I think the Liberte is the big winner, and it is a fast bike. the new tires for the Liberte are rated up to 120 psi. thinking of ceramic wheel bearings for the Liberte.

some more Liberte observations. the gap in the middle of the hinge joint = .004 inch. positive contact when closed on the closing edge. some marking where contact was made at the upper internal gap. probably when I was being hard on the bike. the highest stress points to inspect are the lower folding hinge and the lower front yoke attachment. no cracks on mine. the center beam wall is thin, I can feel a small amount of flex if I push hard. the Liberte bottom bracket (pedal bearing) is an external bearing using a hollow spindle (lightweight) where the Forte is not. I am really impressed with the Engineering and alum construction quality of the lightweight Liberte. the key is thin wall alum welding. I think it is a good value, but only 120 miles on it so far.

Zizzo Liberte - folding bike

intrigued by the 4-bar Zizzo latching mechanism. it's an over-center design and keeps the mechanism out of the foot pedal path. they have to manufacture this precisely to work properly. time will tell if holds up. Brompton hinges are clamped wedges which are long lasting and foolproof but would extend into the foot path on this bike design. I restrained myself from disassembling the 4-bar link. if I was 15 yrs again, I would have taken it apart to measure everything exactly and make a drawing. :)

with a slight adjustment of the Forte derailer (1/2 turn of tension nut) the fully Shimano gear train (Altus derailer) and twist shifter are perfect. this was the big change for the 2023 Forte.

upgraded the Forte tires to Schwalbe Marathons 20 x 1.75. I really like them. if anyone needs 20 x 1.95 spare tires and tubes (original Forte), send me a note, otherwise they will hit the trash bin soon, cheap tires.

the Liberte tires seem to be good, and I ordered a spare set along with a pair of Schwalbe Marathons 20 x 1.5 for comparison.

blasting out of here on Monday for an airplane and bike ride to see something new! what if I have an unsolvable problem with the bike on the road? ... call an Uber, fold it up and throw it in their trunk. simple as that.

John Bryan State Park mountain bike trails. I had a late start because of low ceilings but they lifted enough for me to get into Springfield. I rode the mountain bike trails at John Bryan state park. What a blast! I knew it was getting late but I didn't really care, the trails were good, and the music was pumping. I just didn't care about anything but what was around the next bend. I needed to beat it back 10 miles to the airport but that went by quickly. Temps were 3C this morning and reached 7C for a high. I worked up a sweat today. I am giving the Liberte bike a good hard work out and it is good. On the way back my feet were becoming cool because I was into the wind, so I put on some plastic bags around my wool socks and that did the trick. I remember doing this as a kid in Kansas once in a while when bird hunting, except they were Wonder bread bags. the old Ithaca 12-gauge Model 37 pump. it was a good one, and I was good with it, full choke. :) there was one time, the teal ducks came in as a group over a pond late in the evening where I was waiting, they made a noise like a jet. I was in awe and as I lined up on a bird, I could not pull the trigger because of the elegance of their formation flight. that was before I had my first airplane ride, but something was there. in Western Kansas you get guns early. at age 10 I had my first 22 auto. have you ever shot rats at a grain elevator? Ah, memories.... and the 7th grade tractor driving safety course was mandatory, and it probably saved my life.

I activated the sump heater a couple hours before the flight and the engine was up to temp when I arrived.... two 100W sump pads.

airplane flight = +1
bike ride = +1
add these together = +2 right, NO, somehow when you combine these it is +5.

hey, the salsa on that Hungry Mexican omelette was freshly made at the Sunrise Cafe in Yellow Spring. I omitted the black olives because they were too salty last time. bring the appetite because it was huge.

another Liberte lightweight speedster. unboxing and upgrading the touch points. general inspection and check ride. it's good and I'm still impressed with the quality packaging and bike. the original Liberte seat is not bad but I upgraded. I like the Zizzo removable flat pedals. new grips are GP1. I think the lightweight Liberte is a perfect match for the RV and I also think the bike weight limit should be strictly enforced, 240 lb. my weight = 172 lb. the Liberte is quick on the long stretches and can handle easy mountain bike trails.

Zizzo frame lock adjustment. mine are fine but I kept looking at it and thought there should be some adjustment feature if there is any wear in the mechanism. it seems since 2018 they have added this capability easily. so that is good. the over center latching mechanism acts like a stiff spring. I have no affiliation with Zizzo, but I think they make a good product at a reasonable cost.
