Rudder - FEA analysis

Post by A2022 »

I have not done much large sheet metal FEA analysis before, but I thought I would give it a try. say hello to shell and cbush elements, :). the goal is to improve my FEA skills and to complete some parametric studies for natural frequency response and weight sensitivity. I'll start with the RV6 rudder (since I have it) and then move to the RV9 rudder. this is planned to be a long Winter project. I will say it is really nice to be able to go back and look at "RB's" original hand drawings of the RV6 rudder. this one is for .016 thick skins.

deleting the rivets holes for natural frequency modeling. I've settled on the approach for this analysis. now to execute it.

I try to do something with this each day. all rivet holes have been blanked. I am running some FEA vibration test panels to understand how best to fasten these sheet metal components in the model. I don't have the CBUSH element available, so I am testing coupled nodes, beams and springs to simulate the rivets. it's about rivet DOF! I am working to get Hypermesh/Hyperworks to hopefully speed the placing rivets. that may or may not work out. this is a learning exercise for me. sheet metal and rivets, learning to efficiently build a model and have accurate results. all fun stuff!

that took a while, but finally into Hypermesh. moving slowly on this and will need to make some analysis verification models firstly. this is the RV6 rudder, but I might as well begin the RV9 rudder solid model to have it ready for analysis.

grinding thru my hypermesh training. I think this program will be powerful for 2D meshing sheet metal, especially the batch mode. it will take me a while to complete this training, but I am working on it. how does this one look? :)

RV6 rudder - working geo cleanup in hypermesh. painful for my old mind to learn another program. these are mid-surfaces, generated in hyperworks from the imported solid model.

stumbling my way through this but finding a few tricks. it will take me a while to fully grasp hypermesh. CBush elements are available with the Opti solver (Nastran based), and that is what I was truly after. rivets will be represented by RBE3-CBUSH-RBE3. if I am going to do this, I want a quality analysis.
