what did you do this week - 2024FW2

after 18 years I managed to get some new boots, size 12. the old CAT boots are still OK, but need a new insert because I was getting a hot spot on the left. these new boots have a bigger sole and in doing a fit check, they don't work for me in this plane. the sole catches on the upper cross bar so they are out. the last thing you want upon landing is your feet tangled. I'll use my old boots for flying. I buy my boots at the grocery store. :)

refreshed the 5-year-old Velcro on my 3x5 card holder. I scuffed the plastic since I have found it to provide a better bonding surface. I use this holder more than you would think. I am going to copy my pre-start and runup checklist to a 3x5 card size and put it here for a test. I am particular about my checklist. after a 30-mile bike ride, I'm tired and don't want to miss anything for the flight out. the checklist is peace of mind, and it always works.

cleaned the canopy with micro mesh and cotton. micro mesh is good for big stuff but will not remove the film. soft cotton (old t-shirt) will remove the film.

the finger wiggle causes two planes to become inverted. his fingers actually fluttered. I think that is the secret. I need to try that wiggle the next time I see an airliner to see if it works. :)

flight check for the new checklist position. it seems to work... chasing some angels. windy today, not many flying. -20C overnight temp projected in the next several days here. I may need to breakout the large cowl air dams. Overall, Winter is when you want to fly, no bugs. 28 hrs on the oil.

I'm in a slight turn... where does this projector beam come from? I think this is natures gift to show, yeah, you are actually here. :)

cold and medium winds today. not many outside. refreshed my overall checklists and installed 2.5-inch cowl inlet air dams. installed the opposite side curtain that Amanda sewed for me. I saw one other aircraft and then he was gone. I had this normally busy area to myself. the coldest I saw was -25C. I have flown previously at -30C so I knew this was OK. the cold thick air is really fun for play. performance is crazy good. I think I was airborne in a couple seconds after throttle push. while out having some fun, I noted maximum climb rate = 5500 ft/min with a medium pull, a cloud was in the way at times, going vertical. note: if you are going to fly in these cold temps, make sure your crank case vent does not freeze. oil temp = 147F and CHT = 300F. the engine is going to make a lot of water in these cold temps so be sure to dry the engine later. a very good day.

note: RV8 drivers were probably inside inspecting their canopies for cracks, while the 9s launched into the high-performance cold air. :)

music for the flight. I like this part.... put the needle on the record.
