Cessna 172 Skyhawks are flying around every time I make a flight. Those birds just keep going.... for years. I learned to fly in one of them 48 years ago, so I thought I would take a look at their website to see the updates. They have a full Garmin panel suite, cup holders for every seat, optional air conditioning, and anything you could want. It's not fast but is very comfortable, durable and proven. It also has a lot of static wicks....what do they know that I don't? Cessna must believe that dissipating static electricity is important.
The first static wicks were developed by a joint Army-Navy team led by Dr. Ross Gunn of the Naval Research Laboratory and fitted onto military aircraft during World War II. They were shown to be effective even in extreme weather conditions in 1946 by a United States Army Air Corps team led by Capt. Ernest Lynn Cleveland.
Dayton Granger, an inventor from Florida, received a patent on static wicks in 1950.
