Curious about how geodata is used for flight routes

Hi all,

I’ve been exploring how geodata is used across different industries, and I’m especially curious about its role in aviation, particularly when it comes to flight routes.

How is geodata used in planning or optimizing routes for commercial flights? Is it mainly based on fixed airways and weather data, or are there real-time adjustments using geospatial analysis? I’ve also read a bit about ADS-B and tracking aircraft positions—how does that connect with geodata systems?

And outside of commercial airlines, I wonder how this applies to cargo aviation, private flights, or even drones. Are there open data sources or visual tools that let people explore this kind of information?

Would love to hear from anyone with experience in aviation, GIS, or related fields!

Thanks in advance. :)
