Thorough pre-flight AND post flight cowl removal...

Found this on my post-flight cowl removal today...threads crossed and locked.

It was tight enough to keep oil inside, but with the threads crossed, it felt tight as I checked the oil on pre-flight. You can bet I'll be re-checking that each time now...

Our dipstick tube loosened up in flight. The safety wire kept it in place.

Can't see safety wire on yours Chad. Did you safety wire the tube?

You safety wire the dipstick? How do you check it on pre-flight or do you safety wire it after every preflight?

Bob, Dipstick TUBE!

Not the dipstick. Just the tube. I wanna say that Mattituck showed us how to do it. I have seen it on other brands as well.

I know what the problem is.....That dipstick cap isn't RED!

When I check my 'earl, I always tighten the dipstick, loosen it, then tighten again to make sure its not cross-threaded.

3.5 hours...no chance to fly again until at least Wednesday, and that's a slight chance due to heat...

Heat?

You mean that you won't fly if it's too hot?

Yep. It's not worth cooking the oil and cylinders on the two mile taxi in 95 degree heat to me...if I get the chance to fly late evening or early morning, I will, but not any time in the afternoon right now. :drink:

Are you sure that is not a metric thread?

Chad, you can safety wire the dipstick...
John, I believe Jack Rosen showed us how to do it.

Chad, all ya gots to do is start by wrapping the wire into a loop around the top of the cap flats, then twist it snug while going down and secure the bottom into the small hole down on the bottom of the tube. You tighten it just enough so that you can lift off the loop from the cap, check the oil level, then put the loop back onto the top of the cap.

I'll snap off a picture this week of mine when I get to the hangar on Monday.

Here's the Picture of it. Works great.. if you don't mind the paint chipping off a bit.

That's RIGHT!

Jack DID show us how he did that!

He is a true visionary!
