removal with the winch was very easy. I have done it by hand several times but this is much better. the winch was very inexpensive. removed a total of about 50 grams of lead from the crank (we need to get rid of that shit). constant speed props are a hassle, but it saved my life and my wife's one time at 42B, so I am stuck with them. WW RV200 = massive hub and light weight blades. keep them serviced and they should last for a very long time. hopefully, I can take these one to 5000 hours.

Ancient history, when I stopped by Whirlwind a while back in San Diego. Jim Rust was having a problem with cracking at the forward face screw locations of his new 300 series hub in development. I gave him a free analysis. He made some changes to his design. I believe he would have gotten there eventually, but I made it faster. if you are flying a WW 300 series, you are welcome! I used Russian FEA analysis software from a guy displaced to New Zeeland, Mecway. it's a global world. :) nasgro crack propagation analysis looked fine for the service interval, but with any component, keep to the service inspection interval. it's probably OK to post this, since Whirlwind was purchased by Hartzell.

Where is the WW service center located? about 2-3 years ago I drove it out to Austinburg, OH and they serviced it same day. I think I also heard that facility doesn't service the props any longer.

I can't believe I missed out on the Big Chair in Austinburg when I was there!

that's some chair or the guy is really small....

I was referenced to a guy up that way in Burton. I am not familiar with him, but he seems reasonable on the phone. Burton is 30 miles SW of Austinburg. I am driving next week and will drop the prop off around noon. he will call me when it's ready for inspection that evening, because I wanted to have a look. if it's OK, he will reassemble the following day and I will drive home. I am camping ($20) close to a bike trail and will ride the 20-mile trail there and drink beer (not at the same time). I have my eye on Mary Yoder's Amish Kitchen and Vinney's Italian Kitchen for pizza. that's a nice part of country and the temps and weather look good for next week, nice and cool. another option could be flying into Geauga County airport, 7G8, because it's very close, but would need to work logistics with Jay.

yes, it was even better than the photo. I had it twice because the dough changed about a month ago to a homemade sour dough. in my humble opinion, it is unbeatable. they knocked it out of the park. I opted for the margarita style with no olives, because it is an Italian restaurant, and I knew the tomatoes would be fresh and they were. Commadore Perry IPA is very good.

Vinney's Italian Kitchen pizza is some of best! the 10-inch pizza = $10.

200RV inspection... some galling on a couple of surfaces on the hub but it was deemed acceptable. I didn't post photos of the galling to protect the innocent. I was not concerned about the location of the galling from a stress perspective. the blades and the blade hubs looked good. there are a lot of moving parts associated with a constant speed prop. keep them serviced and lubed for maximum life. do I still believe I can take this prop to 5000 hours, yep.

I was losing some of the tightening shims on one side prior to servicing. I believe this is because I really worked the prop one winter day at -25C. lesson learned... :)

attempted to safety wire my prop bolts after torque to 47 ft-lbs, but I had sheared a roll pin. luckily this is a bolt that is easily removed. I ordered some new roll pins and now have a C200 Mccauley prop manual.

edit: the roll pin did not shear; it was simply missing.

well, this is a something. I had a roll pin missing and replaced it with same size (5/64 inch) but other original roll pins were so deflected I could not get safety wire to pass.

JDW Propeller sent me replacement bolt roll pins. they are .125-inch diameter. the current installed roll pins are 5/64. the measured hole thru the bolt is .087 inch. so, no way the .125-inch roll pin replacements would work. I tried some Harbor Freight 5/64 pins that I cut to length, but they could not handle the torque and collapsed. what was I thinking? what I think we have here is a McCauley hub with an early version of the bolt roll pins. probably sold to Whirlwind to use the stock. the current version is .125-inch diameter. so, I drilled out a bolt to .125-inch and filed the nut slot to the same, installed a current version .125-inch roll pin, and torqued to spec and voila, it worked fine. now to do the rest of them, requires removing the prop. if you have your WW200 prop serviced and if you have 5/64 bolt roll pins, either do this mod or buy new bolts with the .125 pins to save yourself some time and hassle. I need a beer.

replacing the 5/64-inch roll pins at the prop bolts took about 4 hours but was easy and went well. now it's not difficult to pass the safety wire thru the new 1/8-inch roll pins that have over twice the strength. I doubt I'll need to do this again for a while. it's a worth modification and takes it to the current standard without much cost. let me know if you need the roll pin part number.

well, 100 hrs since JDW service, at 1300+ hours, my Whirlwind 200RV has been perfect. upon disassembly and inspection at 1200 hrs, the parts were well within tolerance and appeared to be almost pristine. I believe this prop may last the life of the aircraft. time will tell.

there was a slight galling on one hub surface that Jay polished out. when I saw his polish work, I knew that he knows his business. it was done just right. not too much with just the right blending.
