Fuel Cap engravers

Post by Wicked Stick »

I just got my fuel caps back from the engraver in CT.
They came out very nice. Here's the link to the vendor's website:

Now that is slick. Wish I would think of the simple and cool ideas.

Thanks guys,

They look even nicer in person. :) I felt this was a much better solution than to placard the top of the wing area around the cap with vinyl lettering that will only start to fall off after a few years.

Hopefully having the N number on them will deter would be theives from taking them too since they are not the locking type.

Dave,

Did you polish the caps before you sent them for engraving or was that done by the engraver? If you did it, how did you do it. They look great.

Paul,

They are the deluxe fuel caps that Van's sells. They come nice and shiney like that right out of the box. I chose them because I hate having to pry open the other caps.

Heard you got your bottom ramp skins all done (with the help of Scott).
Did you use solid rivets on all the holes for the 836's to the 850 skin ?
I chose to put flush cherry max rivets on the two most aft holes rather than trying to fit some sort of bucking bar between the 836's and the 822 floor skin.

I guess I never looked at my caps closely since I have the same ones, except I opted for the locking ones.

I think I put in about 3 or 4 pulled rivets in the hard to reach place on the 850. I put proseal on most of the joints to help reduce vibration.

Yep, I think the Pro-seal is a good idea in this area. Not only for sealing out oil/exhaust residual, but also for dampening out vibration and hopefully preventing any cracking from exhaust pulses.

Both sets of caps look nice but if I had to vote, I'd say I like the WS's caps came out better. The font looks just a little easier on the eyes and I like that the engraving is inked in.

How much does something like this cost?

I recall mine being $10 each. I don't think WS's are inked. I think that is just a shadow.

Mine are "inked" or "painted" depending on how you want to describe it.

I suppose you could always do that part yourself if you wanted to.

Well.... for $10 each I could probably live with the font and ink in my own letters. :)

I just got an e-mail from Wayne that he's putting up a new website for his engraving business. Wayne's the one I had do my fuel caps (see above posts) that is based in CT.

He also explained to me that he puts 2 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear coat on the caps, which means they will look good for a long long time.

Here's a sneak peek at the upcoming website.

Wayne does read rivetbangers, so I'm guessing/hoping he will chime in and let us know when his new website is up and running full time.
