-12 Engine and Avionics Price?

Post by slow8 »

How much will the engine/prop package and the avionics packages run? Just looking for a guestimate.

My guess is it will be ~$25K or so. Those rotax' engines are a bit pricey.

A 100HP Rotax engine is running around $18,000+ depending who you buy it from. My firewall forward package cost me another $3,800. So minimum of about $23,000 just for the engine and accessories. Add avionics on top of that. Minimum of 3 to 5 grand. Depending on your tastes in flight instrumentation.

And actually, right now because we are all waiting for the NPRM from the FAA, Vans hasn't submitted for the kit to be evaluated for eab compliance. As such they are only officially offering it as an E-LSA which means you don't get to change the avionics from what Van's has chosen with their prototype.

I believe that if you want different stuff, you would have to go for the EAB category, which puts you in uncharted waters.

here's a guess:
912uls $18000
prop $2000
D180 w/probes $4000
G 396 $1800
Icom210 $1250
FWF $2500
MISC ?????

Total $29550 kinda hurts to see it spelled out in black and white!

Assuming your numbers are close (and right now that is all that we can do) you are going to be just north of $50k plus paint and tools. That is a big chunk of change but... It is not all spent at once and lots of guys have more than that in a boat, or a daily driver car or truck. And you are getting a brand new plane with standard systems that will be well tested. I guess you could build some of the other kits, even ones from Van's, and do it "your way" for less. I think this plane fills a nice niche in the market for a reasonable cost.

I definitely feel like it is going to be a winner of a plane. I suspect that it will do very very good.
