Fiberglass Installation on Empennage

Post by c182pilot »

Does anyone know of a good website detailing how the fiberglass tips are installed on the RV-7A?

What is the filler material inside the tip?

Here is Dan Checkoway's page on the subject:

I think that I may wait until the finishing kit is here before I do the fiberglass stuff so I can do them all together.

as far as I am aware it is just normal foam. just cut to size and shape and then stuck in there.

People either make a temporary (or permanent) rib from foam or balsa wood. The plug helps maintain the shape of the fiberglass tip. A layer of fiberglass is usually set over the balsa wood. After this, a filler material is applied over the glassed area and sanded, re-applied, sanded, re-applied, etc. etc. etc.
