They definitely work for me, but they don't last more than 10 to 20 rivets when in my hands, but that's likely just me. I find I can keep the 470 head clean with a piece of rivet tape on both the rivet and on the rivet set, which is what I do in really tight spots where a modified set is required and a snap soc wouldn't fit.

Been working on wiring and more wiring and more wiring. Testing as I go... Fun stuff!

I just have not had much time to devote lately....

I am taking a few pics here and there but pics of wiring are about worthless.

Prop should be here today!

Intercom and associated wiring: done
Com radio: wired and working
GPS: wired and working
Everything firewall forward: wired and working for the stuff I can test
Map, Avionics and dome lights and dimmers: all wired and working

I am going to finish up the efis/ems/hs34/AP74 wiring harnesses and then move on to the remaining airframe wires.

Won't be long till I get this puppy to the airport!

Had some free lunch time so I thought I would post some pics...

Here is a shot of how I did my support ribs behind the tipup panel:

Image

Here is a blurry shot of the panel less parts:

Image

Here is when I installed my plug wires/shields:

Image

Image

& here we are with all the parts reinstalled and the Dynon harnesses started:

Image

Right side of the engine all wired. I will be looming all of these wires and securing them. All ties are temporary at this point:

Image

Left Side:

Image

Here is how I did the control cables thru the firewall. Do yourself a favor and do these before hanging the engine mount and do not use these one hole eyeballs. They are a pain in the butt!:

Image

Image

Image

Hung the tailpipes and installed the supports:

Image

Finished the install and support for the cables. Van's std cables are almost too short. They will not work with the plan's version of the support bracket so I made my own:

Image

Image

Image

Started the buss work inside:

Main
Image

Battery
Image

Bunch of random wiring pics:

Image

Image

I put me a dome light in the mapbox and one on each side under the panel mounted to the subpanel pointed down:

Image

Image

Image

Dimmers all mounted, wiring yet to be bundled:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Here is what's left to do on the Dynon harnesses. Not much really cuz most of these left hanging out are DASB wires and PC upload/download cables.

Image

Keep in mind that I have split loom, spiral wrap and about 2000 wire ties to install before this is a finished product!!!

That is a two conductor for my PTT switch. The d-pin connector at the intercom was full as a tick and I did not want to put two wires in the same pin so I decided to put the PTT connection out here at the MIC jacks.

It will end up running back down thru the center tunnel and up to the stick.

Milestone for me anyway....Prop is here!

Post by Brantel »

Getting the prop is one of those milestones in my opinion where a builder thinks to himself that he might actually pull this off and be able to fly this creation some day......Prop is here and it is beautiful in my eyes!

Would have love to have a nice HZ BA CS but the wallet said you must live with a FP or else!

That pic was dated 08/30/2000 :o

9 years in the making! The wife does not smile so much anymore when it comes to the plane. She is however looking forward to using it for scooting around on mini vacations! :)

This is waaay cool. In some ways I feel like a godfather watching your progress. I understand about the money thing. At some point I am going to have a meeting of the minds with the bank account. I can see it now. *sigh*

In the past few days I have worked thru the following:

- Finished the mic/phone jacks and installed them for good in the panel.
- Finished installing/wiring the transponder and antenna.
- Mounted and wired the Dynon Serial to Gray Code encoder converter box for the transponder.
- Mounted the com antenna's. One is for my panel mount and one is for my handheld backup...
- Finished all of the EFIS/EMS wiring harnesses except for the trim/flap/fuel sender connections. All the rest is finished.
- Finished the HS34 and AP74 harnesses.
- Ran 5/8" black tubing aft of the spar under the seats and into the tailcone.
- Pulled the strobe, aft nav light, ELT, AP, Elev Trim, etc thru the black tube.
- Hooked up the MP transducer to the MP kit supplied by Vans. I purchased some 1/4, 1/8 & 1/16" tubing from McMasterCarr along with reducer fittings and this worked out great. The 1/16" tube creates a natural restriction in the line to hopefully help with fluctuations.
- Drilled and installed a pushbutton clip for my Co-Pilot stick.

I am in a mad push to get as much as I can finished at home because I took off the last week of this month and the goal is to get the airplane to the airport on 9/26 and get the wings back on. Then it will be a full week of airplane work to get what I can finished.

My job now is only 5 minutes from the house and the airport is 30 minutes away. My prior job was 5 minutes from the airport. This will slow me down once the move is made because my wife is not going to stand for me to be over there at the airport after work everyday! Maybe I can squeeze in a day or two a week and most Saturdays.

Milestone! Aircraft has a new home!

Post by Brantel »

Took the week off to make the move and get some work done ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

In the hangar with the wings on for good...

Image

Got the prop on and the spinner started...

Image

Drilled on the wingtips and installed about 80 nutplates :bang:

Image

I spent most of the days from 09/25 thru 10/3 moving the airplane factory to KMOR which is 30 minutes from home. That was a ton of work moving everything and I mean everything over there. My garage is now a parking lot again for the wife's minivan and I definately have empty nest syndrom!

I was able to get the cowl finished down to the last coat of primer surfacer, the airplane moved, the wings installed for good, the flaps and ailerons mounted again, the rigging re-attached, the wingtips drilled on and all 80 nutplates installed, hung the prop and got started on installing the spinner.

Congratulations!!!!!!!! It looks like your move went smooth! I didn't sleep for a couple of weeks worrying about moving my airplane from my workshop in the back yard to the automotive paint shop and then to the airport. I imagine all kinds of bad scenes with the fuselage falling off the the trailer while loading or unloading. It is a real mile stone and you have made good progress since getting it moved. Good luck and hope you get yours flying soon!!! :) :)

That's quite a milestone there Brian, congrats. I bet it sure feels strange to walk into the garage now.

Re: How I ended up with the FF Transducer

Post by Wicked Stick »

Brantel wrote:But the more I worried about the issues I could dream up on this version like:

1. Cracking of the solid tube over time
2. Pulling fuel through the transducer creating an opportunity to suck air through a bad seal on one of the covers
3. Vapor lock in the line
4. Pulsing of the readings when the boost pump is on

The more I thought about changing it the more I could'nt leave it!

So I decided to move it! Using lots of the tips in the various threads, I came up with this option:

Image

This option gave me an opportunity to follow most if not all of the manufacturers rules for installing this thing.
Wasn't one of the guidelines to have at least 5" of straight pipe/hose going into and out of the red cube ?
