Static Port option in kit - drawings?

Post by captain_john »

Hey! I just recalled why I didn't get anything in the fuse kit relative to the static line install. It is because I didn't spend the $19 on the optional static air kit from Van!

Soooo, I was wondering. Does anyone have a copy of the plans that come with the static kit? I am sure it is just as I am planning on doing it, but the plans would make good bathroom reading material!

Anyone got a copy they are willing to scan or photograph?

hmmm... looks like I DID pay the $19 for the static kit, but I have no clue what kinda static port they give me... probably nothing spectacular.

I really like the safeair static ports, and their line kits are pretty nice too. Maybe I wasted my $19 ;)

Hey bud:

Even though you flew today while I had to work, I will check into it tomorrow for you and send you whatever I have.

I think that I read not so good things about the Safeair ports a while back on the "other" forum. It might be worth doing a quick search to see what is out there.

I just want to see how people route the line foreward.

Thanks guys!

Jim, you want to run the line along the longeron like Chad did here:

...using clips kinda like Bret's, in this picture:

There is a DRAWING of the clip on the lower right hand side of some plan, but I forget which one it is. I am not in the shop right now. If you cannot find it, I will look it up for you.

We DO need to drill a 3/16" hole in the 705 bulkhead for the line to pass through. It goes up high and penetrates the 705-G angle bracket, so you will be removing some metal!

OH, and BTW...

I am using the Possum Works ports. They are essentially polished head, stainless steel 8/32's that have been drilled out with a 1/16" hole through the shank.

The tubing slides onto the shank and you doop (technical term) it up with ProSeal when all is said and done.

Van's kits come with two rivets that you drill out, plastice tubing, and a tee. You put one rivet on each side of the fuselage and connect the tubing using the tee and route it along the longerons. I just drilled #40 holes in the llongerons and used some clear nylon tie wraps to secure the tubing. It was approved by the local DAR and of course I used hayco fasteners where I went through bulk heads. I don't have a working scanner so I can't e-mail it to you. You can probably duplicate the kit at your local autmotive parts store. I used RTV to cement the rivets to the rivets and tee. Good luck!

Bob, yah... I dig the concept. I was just looking for something written from Van. I don't really have a reason why. Just my anal retentive nature, I s'pose.

I have the Possum Works Ports and I think I really like them over the empty pop rivet idea ala Van.

Thanks!

OH WAH, TANNA, SIAM! (say it 10 times to yourself)

They are 10/32's!!! Not 8's!

Thank you to all who didn't point this error out.

You are all so kind.

10s vs 8s

Post by aparchment »

I missed the 10/8 distinction and was focusing on "doop." What the heck is that? I assume a combination of goop and dob?

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier CJ, I couldv'e sent them to you. I went with Vans rivet/static ports. I think they'll be fine, can't get much lighter than an empty pop rivet, lol. I see where a lot of guys go with the fancy stuff, But I'm just building a VFR special :)

That's a cool name, VFR Special!

Chap, mebbe putting that on the tail?

Thanks anyways.

Say, Tim D. (from this BBS) flew up from LI, NY yesterday with a couple of other builders. Nice -6 he has! You gotta see it!

We are going to have some local project visits coming up. Perhaps one per month. If you would like to participate, shoot me an email. I am making an email list up with all the local builders and will coordinate the visits.
