RV7 Rudder R-904 rib - the big center hole

Post by CalKid »

My edge clearance is 1/32 on the 3/8s hole. There is a spacer right next to it but is this too thin?

I think you are asking about this hole, since the flange is only about 1/2 inch, you aren't going to meet that two diameter spec for sure. My feeling was it was designed that way, lots of metal sandwiching that thing ... so ..."build on".

OH! I gotcha now!

No need for edge distance there. A plate nut is located there and there is zero stress on the flange.

It is supposed to be that way. If this were a structural hole, you WOULD need to observe the edge distance rule.

Does this help?

The 3rd reply was correct. THAT hole results in only a very thin strip of metal remaining after drilling out the hole to specs. Picts. from other sites are similar to my R904 hole. Just got spooked by how thin it was after paying such close attention to hole edge clearance as you go through the project.

Anchor nut hole, I wouldnt sweat it. The load will be spread out along the flange anyway and not on that little section without the edge distance.
