I've looked at a million web sites. Every one seems to chop something out of that little slot on the forward canopy skin to get the plexiglass to lay flat. I'm going to fiberglass over everything on the front, so this will all get smoothed out and hidden. On the interior side of the forward canopy, I'm probably going to lay a fillet of sikaflex in addition to the fiberglass on the exterior.

Waiting for the big cut first! Trimmed some more on the front last night and it is getting closer to laying flush with the skin.

Bruce,

After all my trimming is done, the front edge of the canopy sits proud of the forward skin about 1/8" off the skin.

I am calling it close enough and am going to Sikaflex it to the forward skin as it is.

The stuff is supposed to be able to bridge a good gap and I am going to put it to the test!

Might yet trim those tabs yet too!?!

to call it a plane at this stage you either need to have the wings slid in place or make airplane noises while sittting under the canopy. please send documentation of either to validate your airplane.

I thought I'd post a couple pics of my big cut. We've had very few days this year where the temps got up to 80° but I decided to go for it anyway with the temperature in the 70's. Summer is wasting away, after all. I got it all taped up on both sides of the cut line, with about 3 layers of tape on each side:

A while later... no big deal at all:

I finally got the front of the canopy to fit like a glove to the skin, but it still needs some trimming here to get it to fit inside the "ears", and then the final trimming down the sides. I trimmed a bit on the skin out of the ears to open it up a little, but I'll probably need to trim some more before it all fits real well.

I'm planning on using SIKA for the whole thing.

Brian, negative status... Wings are not on. Winter is coming and garage space is a premium. Engine stuff first...

Bruce, lookin' great!!!

Well you still have the option of posting a video of you making airplane noises under the canopy. I will give you full credit to upgrade from project to airplane.

I have about 50 weblogs bookmarked. Lots of great ones out there now. My weblog is more of a photo album with comments. Every picture there is full resolution.

My Major Visible Progress? I did the big cut yesterday!

Image

Today will be more trimming on the sides and getting the fit better around those ears. I did start cutting them down a bit, but I think the easiest thing to do is just get rid of a big portion of them. The large slot there will eventually be filled up with sikaflex and covered with fiberglass.
