I also cut the optional lightening holes in my 9A spar with a flycutter.
Learned 2 things:
1. Clamp it.. clamp it again..... and don't forget to clamp it!!
2. Slow the drill press down. It ain't a race you know!!!

Yeah, you can hurt yourself real good if your not careful with those thangs.
Slowest setting, and yep, clamp it down good, and use light pressure and a wee bit of cutting oil helps keep the squealing down too.

Okay so I just got to this stage. Where did you all get the dimensions for the lightening holes? Just a guesstimate?

My old plans (the ones I got with 70312) didn't include it at all!
WS had them on the ones for the -8 and I used his.
You mean they aren't on your plans?
One would have thought they might have added them in by now. I seem to recall seeing them on Thermos' plans.

They are there but I don't recall seeing dimensions. I'll check the plans again.
EDIT - Duh! They are right there, on the plans. Just hard to find. I had to look under.... optional lightening hole detail.
I have to remember to not get complacent just because this is a better kit than my RV-4.

They should be on your plans Scott. Your set is newer than mine, and I had them. It's drawing 6. Here's the area of that drawing...

Yep, they were right there. I edited my post above to say that I'd found it. Thanks!

Just got done cutting the holes (I used a hole saw) and re-priming. I'm glad I cut the holes. It even feels lighter now.

I used the hole saw too. I can also still count to ten with my fingers!
Those circle cutters look DANGEROUS!

That's why my fly-cutter sits in the tool chest unused. Hole saws are much less finger hungry.

Oh those fly cutters aren't that bad if you use them at low RPM's and on a drill press
. For my money I'd rather use a hole saw any day of the week. Except in the case of large radious holes, then a hole saw has way too much drag.
