Wing Wiring Conduit location??

Post by Lorin Dueck »

I'm almost afraid to ask since I will probably get as many different answers as I get replies.. but where did you all drill the hole for your wing wiring conduit :?:
I'm planning on using Van's corrugated tubing - and am leaning toward the upper front corner of the main ribs. This should be out of the way of the bellcrank, pitot lines, and access covers.. but????
Thanks!!

OK - I thought about it a little more - and decided to go with Van's recommendation on the wiring hole location.
It's not as far forward as I feared it might be - and stays out of the access panel location.
I made a small jig so that all the holes lined up... pretty cool, I thought.

Lorin, I went with the standard Vans location too.

I hafta say that overthought this one for a while too.

Nuttin' to it but ta do it.

I say it is better than wiring grommets.

Vans conduit

Post by smithhb »

I will be using the conduit from Vans. Here is where I drilled the holes in my wing ribs...

I decided to drill a 0.75" hole in each wing rib to accommodate the wire conduit. This will provide plenty of access for wiring for the wingtip landing lights, strobe, nav light, under-wing LED, A/P servo as well as possibly a wingtip antenna.

Good choice Bret!

Keep it a tad away from the flange and centered between two rivets to make it easier on yourself later when it comes time to buck the skin rivets!

Man, those -9 ribs look weird after seeing my -7 ones for the ast year!

CJ, I agree they look different. What is the slot in the rib for?

my guess would be an "S" shaped stiffener that runs inboard/outboard ?

Bingo. We have a stiffener that runs spanwise halfway down the wing.

Hole location

CJ said "Keep it a tad away from the flange and centered between two rivets to make it easier on yourself later when it comes time to buck the skin rivets! "

CJ, I pretty much followed the suggestion by Van's. I also ordered the flex conduit and will have no problem (with the hole location) bucking the bottom skin rivets.

The nice thing is the ribs arrive from Vans already deburred, fluted and straight as an arrow.
