ECi O-340/IO-340
ECi O-340/IO-340
I've been watching for one of these to pop up in an RV, but haven't heard a thing about them yet. Anybody know anything? I have a bunch of literature at home about 'em, and the O-340 is supposed to put out 177hp without the complexity and weight of ECi's Injected system and return lines.

Chad, Chad, Chad...
The O-360 is 180 hp... as you know.
It is cheaper.
It is more traditional.
It is more available.
It is potentially more relaible.
It has the weight where you need it.
It is proven.
Why do you want a 340?

Not neccesarily...340's are gonna be built whenever somebody wants one...captain_john wrote:It is more available.
So is a Subaru...captain_john wrote:It is potentially more relaible.
It's a little heavier than a -320, and those work fine for -7's...captain_john wrote:It has the weight where you need it.
True, but aren't you planning a -390?captain_john wrote:It is proven.
Less weight, same power.captain_john wrote:Why do you want a 340?
I like the idea of building a very light RV, and this is a possible route that would give me less weight (more like a -320) with the power of a -360. Sounds faster to me. I threw the Subaru comment in just to get a rise out of you guys...
You want a -390 and a CS prop because you WANT one. I don't know what engine I want yet, but if I decide on a -340, it'll be because I WANT one.
You gonna be around tomorrow (Saturday)?

If you were doing a -9, I would wholeheartedly agree.
The -7 can take the weight and power, and is happy doing it...
Yes, I will be on the phone Saturday going from airport to airport. Need to get the Chief out of annual and some other errands.
Gimme a call and we can talk more.

If a James cowl is used, there is a 4" extension required for the prop. This would certainly help CG issues. I'm NOT saying I'm using this engine. I'm more or less curious if there are any out there yet...
If a traditional engine is on my plate, my first choice right now is a Mattituck TMX IOF-360. Mmmmm FADEC...

I am not a big fan of prop spacers.
I know there are many of them out there. The whole rotating mass out on an extension thing doesn't appeal to me.
It seems somehow problematic at best. With all the balancing stuff going on today I estimate that the closer the prop is to the engine, the better off things can be. That isn't saying that you can't get an engine to "feel smooth"with an extension on it. I just think that all things being equal, the extension doesn't help anything out in regards to smoothness.
Also... the James Cowl, according to a 7A builder around here has alot to be desired. He isn't thrilled with product quality and/or the fit of the plenum.
I am going stock Vans.

OH!
When doing the James Cowl, I hear that a shorter (2" I think) spacer is needed with a CS prop.
This is in contrast to the 4" one required for the FP.
FOUR INCHES!!! That is too much potential for wobble in my book.
...but I am sure these things are well made and probably fine.
