Vent

Post by tshort »

Just thinking yesterday ...
The clip on the filler neck for the fuel vent is on the foreward part of the filler; once the vent line goes in there it is not really going to the highest point of the tank (maybe in a tailwheel airplane on the ground, but in level flight it seems like the back outboard corner will be higher).
I guess you won't really be able to fill much higher than this anyway, but has anyone bent the tube to head for the aft outboard corner to get it higher? Seems like this might prevent dripping when the tanks are full.

Any pics :) ?

Just wondering how far back you put it.

p.s. I had to drill out one of the filler ring rivets since I started to put the clip on the aft portion ... just made more sense until I looked at the plans and the spot where the vent line comes thru the ribs :bang: :bang: .

Thomas, I had to drill out a filler rivet because I forgot the vent line holder on the second tank. Dohhh!

I was thinking of curving it around the filler and up into the aft portion of the tank. Is that what you guys did? It would have to be a little longer...

Thomas, let me add to my comment. Mine are bent up and a little forward to the highest point as it (tail dragger) sits on the ground. My reasoning for doing so is this is when the tanks will be the fullest. It seems that if you bent them to the rear the opening would be lower than the filler neck while sitting on the ground and you would get some run off.

Great subject!!! I am sure we'll get some good discussion and theory on this one.

Good point.
I need to figure out about what the attitude will be on the ground and aim the tube to where the high point will be in that attitude...

Take a look at the 3-view drawing. It should be a little forward of the filler neck.
