Starting the center section!

Post by captain_john »

Being as anally retentive as I am, I saved the crates that the kit came in. I then use it to make the tables and workbenches that I need! This is made from the top of the fuse kit box!

Image

I cut it in half and covered it with an old woolen military blanket!

Now to start the assembly process!

Still need to fit the crotch strap kit into place, match drill, debur, dimple and prime. I just couldn't resist taking the photo!

Looks like I really did something!

What makes this exciting is that FINALLY I am working on the "office"!

You know how everyone asks you when will you be working on "the part you sit in"? Well, the time is NOW!

Thanks Guys!

...and yes Will, we got calculations for box fill!

Image

Those #12's occupy 2.25 ci. and the box is a 4"x4"x2 1/8" deep, double stacked with the extension box.

Yes, just a look at it says it is WAAAAAY too full!

Thanks LN,

I have been doing more thinking about it than drilling and cutting lately. I have been putting it togther in my mind before putting cutting edge to metal.

The crotch strap kit and floorboards need to come together correctly. The way I see it, if I do something that I DON'T like here and now, I will see it on every cross country and that will play on my mind the whole time!

I just couldn't live with that.

I am waiting on the Hookers now. The rotary buckles are backordered. I didn't get one and let everyone else get them first. There are some more people in the group waiting for theirs too.

I will update this thread soon with a few cool tricks that I have done like the billet aluminum center section spacers that Machine Inc. made for me!

Thanks Rich!

You mean you made billet spacers for those temporary spacer it says to make from wood? Man, that sounds cool but maybe a little overkill. Or are you talking about some other spacer?

That's what I did also. Milled them on my little Sherline mill. One thing to remember. When you install these in your center section, make sure to use the close tolerance bolts that come with the kit. There is enough slop in hardware store bolts that the holes may not line up well enough to install the close tolerance bolts later, after it is riveted in. This happened to one of my friends who is building an 8A and he is having all kinds of problems now trying to install his wings.

Looking good CJ, i especially like the shiney stuff.

If you made those wings a little longer (75ft Span), added 2 or 3 weapons hardpoints each side, and made them variable geometry, you'd be close to the wings that im working on at the moment!

Overkill? Nahhhh!

Hey Leighton!

Thanks!

Instead of hard points, perhaps integral weapons systems would be better? Cleaner and more stealthy!
