Ordered the emp. kit--here we go!!

Well, after a couple of years of tossing it around, I ordered the beginning(or end!) of a RV8 today. Get ready to answer lots of silly questions for a newbie!

Any last minute advice? I am leaning toward a QB kit after seeing a friends QB, but am still tossing around the SB, and spend the money elsewhere.

Thanks for all the great tips already, i'll be looking for more.

What a great day for you! You are going to have a blast! Ask as many questions as you can think of, take pictures, and share your experience here!

BTW...I vote for SB, and spend that 8 grand elsewhere...

Congrats!

I am pleased with the SB route. I think that the SB is a great route for the first time builder (or at least me) because you have a shallower learning curve, albeit it is spread over a longer time span.

I also was leaning toward the SB, but I talked it over with my dad, and he feels pretty strongly that the quickbuild is the way to go. He is 63, and I think he wants it done (more)quickly so he can fly it before he thinks he is to old!

Congrats from me as well! I'm in no rush to get this done, been working on my emp for a year, a little bit almost every day. I really like the learning and process so I went with the non-quick build, but I can see your Dad's point of view. There is still lots to build even with a QB.

I went SB partly due to $$ but mainly to learn. I keep telling myself to remember that this is a hobby.

Which ever you decide it is a great learning and character building experience.

The kit arrived today, I will have to inventory it this weeked. It looks great, not as intimidating as I was thinking--I am excited!

I just got some more tools today, I will try to get some pics up, but I might have to wait for some rain, we are in the middle of harvest now, so I can't sneak away to easily.

I am a tool addict, I think I was just as excited to get some new tools as the kit!! thats sad!!!

Once in a while you have to let 'some' things take priority.

I'm not completely sure (and don't really want to know), but I think my tool purchases and emp/wings have about the same dollar value so far, you aren't the only tool addict around

Welcome Lance! I grew up and lived in North Dakota until 1977. I now live in Sartell MN and I am building an RV-6A. It is turning into a slow build since I have been working on the quickbuild since August 2001. I still hope to get it flying this year. I was raised in Linton, went to NDSU and lived and worked in Minnewaukan and Fargo before moving here.

I suggest that you might want to joing the MN Wing of Van's Airforce. I don't have the web site handy but it is listed under links at Van's Aircraft web site. We have a number of North Dakota, Iowa, South Dakota and even a few Wisconsin members. About 200 plus with about 90 flying RV's. If my memory is accurate. We just had our Fall pinic at Webster last weekend. Next meeting will be late November early December.

Well, it looks like I am going to go for the SB now, I see that by not ordering a QB kit a month ago, the wait went from 1-2 months, to 4-5 months lead time. I am a farmer, so getting the kit first thing in the spring will do me no good, as I won't have the time to spend on it. The thought of waiting until this time next year to go to work is all the reason I need to convince myself to do it the SB way.

Now, to finish the harvest and get building!!!

You won't be upset with going SB. I have seen many QB guys take just as long as SB guys because the learning curve is so steep if this is your first plane.

With your down time between crops you'll find that the SB goes pretty darn fast. Don't worry, you pick up steam the farther along you get into the kit. Enjoy and welcome!

That's no joke!! With all the training that Brit does with the dogs, I've found myself with more time than I ever thought I would have, and I'm WELL ahead of schedule!
