You know, I haven't started building yet, but having a newly completed shop (in operation about a month now) is absolutely everything I had dreamed it might be.

I'm such a kid out there playing with my toys. Wood working, metal working, glass working... welding, painting, jamming tunes on the surround sound. It's really beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

It's funny how many things you end up working on and building just to build a plane at home.

I built my wings and tailfeathers, along with the canoe in my cellar.
When I did this, I also converted one bay of the garage into a temporary paint booth. In order to do this, I first had to build a shed outside to store all the stuff that I moved to make room in the cellar and garage.

Now that my entire project is moving to the garage I find myself again working on the nest for the project.

I'm currently insulating the ceiling rafters with R-19 and installing a Modine Hot Dawg LP heater too. Then I can work in comfortable temps out in the garage when it's only 20 degrees outside.

CJ had the forsight to do all that even before he started building, me I guess I wing it as the need arises.

They call that Just In Time manufacturing and that's my modus operandi too.

Amen to that...

With two kids, two jobs, a loving wife, and coaching baseball in the summer, it's a given that I'm a Just in Time builder.
I do like to Think ahead though when time permits

Here you go. Also, note the ShopCam link in my signature block. I'm in there occasionally (not as frequently as I'd like!) It's really only interesting if the lights are on.

The color of the walls/ceiling is the same as the deepest blue in the Utah skies. Every long wall in the main shop has at least 16 plugs. I have two 50A welder outlets (one near the man door and one in the shop office.)

Gotta have that extinguisher handy - I'm learning how to weld!

Note the shop webcam in the corner, and one of the all-inportant speakers.

Life is much richer now that I have a buncha tools.

That 60 gal compressor is freakin loud - even with the intakes plumbed away.

The tool pen, and a couple of my EAA 1000 tables.

The all important thermostat on the wall - heat and A/C is a must in Utah!

My DRDT-2 next to the shop office, to be assembled, and my junk/parts bins. That ugly green cabinet has been in my family's workshops for at least 3 genrations.

The shop office, setup for stained glass and electronics work.

You can't see it, but my GMAW/Flux welder is in the corner. I'll have to get a TIG or gas welder if I'm do to anything on the airframe.

I hope you won't be welding anything on an RV airframe

that said, I've used my TIG welder exactly twice for airplane parts... one was to repair cracks in the cabin step of my cherokee, and one was to weld up a mis-drilled hole in the tank attach bracket of my RV left fuel tank

Nice!

You really need a comfortable place to work. I put this project off so long before getting the shop ready.

I suppose that is a good thing, because I don't know if I could have done a -6 the first time around. The -7 is a much easier plane to build, I am glad I waited!

Whoa!!! A Bose home theatre system, and is that a network camera mounted on the wall? With a shop like that, who needs a house?!?!

Outstanding.

You did a nice job finishing everything off. I think that makes a big difference in your enjoyment level.
I think you are on the leader board for the award for "nicest shop environment!!!"

Looks like the perfect place to spend the weekends.

I am sure the plane will be excellent too!
